Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 64

قَالَ هَلْ ءَامَنُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا كَمَآ أَمِنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَخِيهِ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ فَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَـٰفِظًا ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ ﴿64﴾
He said: "Can I entrust him to you except as I entrusted his brother [Yûsuf (Joseph)] to you aforetime? But Allâh is the Best to guard, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy."
قَالَ qāla He said
هَلْ hal Should
ءَامَنُكُمْ āmanukum I entrust you
عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi with him
إِلَّا illā except
كَمَآ kamā as
أَمِنتُكُمْ amintukum I entrusted you
عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā with
أَخِيهِ akhīhi his brother
مِن min before
قَبْلُ ۖ qablu before
فَٱللَّهُ fal-lahu But Allah
خَيْرٌ khayrun (is) the best
حَـٰفِظًۭا ۖ ḥāfiẓan Guardian
وَهُوَ wahuwa and He
أَرْحَمُ arḥamu (is the) Most Merciful
ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ l-rāḥimīna (of) the merciful

64. 1. That is, when you took Yusuf ؑ with you, you made a similar promise of protection, but what happened is before me; now how can I trust you?
64. 2. However, since there was a severe need for grain, despite the apprehension, he did not consider it appropriate to refuse to send Binyamin along, and, relying on Allah, expressed willingness to send him.
