إِۦلَـٰفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيْفِ ﴿2﴾
(And with all those Allâh’s Grace and Protections, We cause) the (Quraish) caravans to set forth safe in winter (to the south) and in summer (to the north without any fear),
إِۦلَـٰفِهِمْ īlāfihim Their familiarity
رِحْلَةَ riḥ'lata (with the) journey
ٱلشِّتَآءِ l-shitāi (of) winter
وَٱلصَّيْفِ wal-ṣayfi and summer

1. The meaning of ایلاف is to make familiar and accustomed, that is, for difficulty and aversion to be removed from a task. The means of livelihood for the Quraysh was trade. Twice a year, their trade caravan would go out and bring back goods for trade, in winter to Yemen, which was a warm region, and in summer towards Syria, which was cool. Because they were the custodians of the Ka'bah, the people of Arabia respected them. Therefore, these caravans would travel without hindrance. In this surah, Allah Almighty is telling the Quraysh that the reason you are able to make two journeys in the heat and cold is due to Our favor, that We have granted you security in Makkah and made you honored among the people of Arabia. If this were not the case, your journey would not be possible. And We destroyed the People of the Elephant for this very reason, so that your honor would remain intact and the series of your journeys, to which you are accustomed, would continue. If Abraha had succeeded in his evil intention, your honor and leadership would have ended, and the series of journeys would have been cut off. Therefore, you should worship only the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah).
