Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

69. 1. The meaning of "iftira" is to say something false. After this, the further addition of "falsehood" is for emphasis.
69. 2. From this, it is clear that success refers to success in the Hereafter, that is, being saved from Allah's wrath and His punishment; mere temporary worldly prosperity is not success. As many people become confused and fall into doubts and suspicions due to the temporary prosperity of disbelievers. That is why in the next verse it is said: "Let them enjoy a little in this world, then to Us is their return," meaning that the pleasures of this world are extremely little and insignificant compared to the Hereafter, not even worth counting. After that, they will have to face severe punishment. Therefore, it should be well understood that the worldly prosperity and material advancements of disbelievers, polytheists, and those who disobey Allah are not proof that these nations are successful or that Allah is pleased with them. These material successes are the result of their continuous efforts, which, according to apparent means, can be achieved by any nation that works hard using those means, whether they are believers or disbelievers. In addition, these temporary successes can also be the result of Allah's law of respite, the explanation of which we have already given in some places before.
