Nay, they have belied the knowledge whereof they could not comprehend and what has not yet been fulfilled (i.e. their punishment). Thus those before them did belie. Then see what was the end of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers)!

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

39. 1 That is, without pondering over the Quran and reflecting on its meanings, they insisted on denying it.

39. 2 That is, the full truth and reality of the past events and future possibilities that the Quran has mentioned have not yet become clear to them, yet they began to deny it; or another meaning is that they denied the Quran without giving it due contemplation, whereas if they had truly reflected upon it and considered those matters which indicate its being the word of Allah, then surely the doors of understanding and meanings would have opened for them. In this case, the meaning of "ta'wil" will be: the secrets, knowledge, subtleties, and meanings of the Noble Quran becoming clear.

39. 3 This is a warning and rebuke to those disbelievers and polytheists, that just as previous nations before you denied the signs of Allah, so see what their end was. If you do not refrain from denying it, your end will not be any different from theirs.
