فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ﴿11﴾
But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep (i.e. the path which will lead to goodness and success).

(Ayah 11) {فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ :} The wealth that Allah Almighty has bestowed upon man was not meant to be squandered unjustly, but rather, it was meant for him to fearlessly enter the difficult pass in order to conquer those heights that are attained through intense struggle. However, he did not even dare to enter this difficult pass. It is called a difficult pass because it is hard for the self to carry out these deeds. The meaning of {’’ الْعَقَبَةَ ‘‘} is a pass, a difficult path up a mountain.

11. 1. ‘Aqabah’ refers to a mountain pass, that is, a path through a mountain, which is generally extremely difficult to traverse. This sentence here is in the form of a rhetorical question implying negation, that is, (فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ 11۝ڮ) 90. Al-Balad:11) “Has he not entered the mountain pass?” The meaning is: he has not entered. This is an example to clarify the effort and hardship that a person must endure against the whispers and demands of Satan in order to do good deeds, just as climbing a mountain pass requires intense struggle (Fath al-Qadeer).

11. But he did not venture through the steep path [9].

[9] In this verse, two words require clarification: one is ﴿اقتحام﴾, the other is ﴿عقبة﴾ ﴿قحم﴾ ﴿في الامر﴾, meaning to enter into a matter without thinking, and ﴿اِقْتَحَمَ﴾ ﴿الامر﴾, meaning to entangle oneself in a matter with hardship or to plunge into a difficult task. And ﴿عقبه﴾ means a difficult path that ascends a mountain or a pass that goes through the mountains, and by this word, only the path going upwards is meant, not the one descending.
