Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
The ground (of complaint) is only against those who are rich, and yet ask exemption. They are content to be with (the women) who sit behind (at home) and Allâh has sealed up their hearts (from all kinds of goodness and right guidance) so that they know not (what they are losing).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah93) ➊ {اِنَّمَاالسَّبِيْلُعَلَىالَّذِيْنَيَسْتَاْذِنُوْنَكَ …:} Allah Almighty, in most places, mentions both aspects of everything. He said that there is no blame on those who were mentioned above; all the burden of sin is only on those who have means of transport, provisions for the journey, and good health, and yet, despite being wealthy, seek permission from you and, due to their cowardice, hypocrisy, and disbelief, feel no shame in staying behind with the women who remain behind, but rather, they take pride and joy in the fact that they were saved from traveling and destruction in the heat.
➋ { وَطَبَعَاللّٰهُعَلٰىقُلُوْبِهِمْ …:} As a result of their hypocrisy, Allah Almighty has sealed their hearts in such a way that they do not even know what pleasure there is in believing in Allah and His Messenger and in striving in the path of Allah, nor do they know what virtue and reward it holds.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
93. 1. These are the hypocrites who were mentioned in verses 86 and 87. Here, they are mentioned again in contrast to the sincere Muslims, because things are recognized by their opposites. خَوَالِفُ, خَالِفَۃ (those who stay behind) refers to men, women, children, the disabled, the severely ill, and the elderly who are unable to participate in battle. The meaning of لا یَعْلَمُوْنَ is that they do not know how great a crime it is to stay behind; otherwise, perhaps they would not have stayed behind the Messenger ﷺ.
