ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ ﴿67﴾
The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islâm has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma‘rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allâh’s Cause) alms]. They have forgotten Allâh, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ al-munāfiqūna The hypocrite men
وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ wal-munāfiqātu and the hypocrite women
بَعْضُهُم baʿḍuhum some of them
مِّنۢ min (are) of
بَعْضٍۢ ۚ baʿḍin others
يَأْمُرُونَ yamurūna They enjoin
بِٱلْمُنكَرِ bil-munkari the wrong
وَيَنْهَوْنَ wayanhawna and forbid
عَنِ ʿani what
ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ l-maʿrūfi (is) the right
وَيَقْبِضُونَ wayaqbiḍūna and they close
أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ aydiyahum their hands
نَسُوا۟ nasū They forget
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ fanasiyahum so He has forgotten them
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites
هُمُ humu they (are)
ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ l-fāsiqūna the defiantly disobedient

(Ayah67) ➊ {اَلْمُنٰفِقُوْنَ وَ الْمُنٰفِقٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ مِّنْۢ بَعْضٍ …:} That is, whether hypocrite men or women, all are alike and all have the same habits and evil traits; they command evil deeds, forbid good deeds, and, due to miserliness, keep their hands closed, meaning they do not spend. Here, Allah’s mention of forgetting them is stated in response to their forgetting Allah. The purpose is that Allah also treated them in the same way, not caring for them, rather depriving them of His grace and mercy. This interpretation is necessary because Allah Himself has quoted from Musa (Moses) (peace be upon him): «لَا يَضِلُّ رَبِّيْ وَ لَا يَنْسَى» [ طٰہٰ : ۵۲ ] “My Lord neither errs nor forgets.” Thus, it is clear that here the attribution of forgetfulness to Allah is only due to the similarity of the word, otherwise that Pure Being is absolutely free from forgetfulness in every way.

{ هُمُ الْفٰسِقُوْنَ:} That is, they have reached the utmost limit in fisq (disobedience). Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: “What value does the goodness of a faithless person have? He should only be called a fasiq (open sinner).” (Muwadhih)

67. 1 The hypocrites, who used to swear oaths to convince the Muslims that 'we are indeed among you,' Allah Almighty refuted this, saying what connection do they have with the believers? Rather, all these hypocrites, whether men or women, are the same, meaning they surpass each other in disbelief and hypocrisy. Ahead, their characteristics are being described, which are completely opposite and contrary to the characteristics of the believers.

67. 2 This refers to miserliness. That is, the characteristic of a believer is to spend in the way of Allah, and the hypocrite's characteristic is the opposite—miserliness, meaning to avoid spending in the way of Allah.

67. 3 That is, Allah Almighty will also deal with them in such a way as if He has forgotten them. Just as in another place it is said, 'Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours' (32:14). The meaning is that just as they neglected Allah's commands in the world, on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will deprive them of His grace and mercy, as if the attribution of forgetfulness to Allah is according to the rhetorical principle of resemblance (mushakalah), otherwise Allah's essence is free from forgetfulness (Fath al-Qadeer).

67. The hypocrite men and women are all alike; they enjoin what is evil and forbid what is good [80], and they withhold their hands (from charity and good deeds) [81]. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [82]. Surely, the hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient.

The Hypocrite Commands Evil and Forbids Good:

The command of enjoining good and forbidding evil has been emphasized so much in the Book and Sunnah that some scholars have considered this duty to be an individual obligation rather than a collective one. And these hypocrites, whether men or women, all act contrary to this important duty. Whenever there is talk of something evil, a matter of disbelief and polytheism, or obstacles are being placed in the path of Islam, their hearts immediately incline towards it and they are ready to assist and cooperate in every possible way, and their hearts find satisfaction and comfort in such matters. And when something good is happening or the matter concerns the elevation of the religion, as soon as they hear such news, their hearts become extinguished. Then they become engaged in such schemes so that either the work does not start at all, and if it has started, it does not reach completion.

[81] That is, in customs, show, and unlawful acts, they spend with happiness and open-heartedness. But when there is a need for donations for jihad or any good cause, their hearts feel constricted and they do not feel like giving anything from their hands.

Attributing Forgetfulness to Allah:

Allah's "forgetting" means that He has deprived these hypocrites of His grace and mercy, and instead, Allah has made them humiliated and disgraced in the eyes of all Muslims. Also, in Arabic idiom, sometimes the name of something is used for its recompense, and this is called "mushakalah," as in ﴿يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُم﴾ (they deceive Allah and Allah recompenses them for their deception). Now, whatever punishments Allah has prescribed as a result of His "forgetting," this word will apply to all those punishments. As Allah has explained these punishments in the next verse, that is, by Allah's "forgetting" is meant His curse upon them and for them is an everlasting punishment.
