وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ ﴿56﴾
They swear by Allâh that they are truly of you while they are not of you, but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that you may kill them).
وَيَحْلِفُونَ wayaḥlifūna And they swear
بِٱللَّهِ bil-lahi by Allah
إِنَّهُمْ innahum indeed, they
لَمِنكُمْ laminkum surely (are) of you
وَمَا wamā while not
هُم hum they
مِّنكُمْ minkum (are) of you
وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ walākinnahum but they
قَوْمٌۭ qawmun (are) a people
يَفْرَقُونَ yafraqūna (who) are afraid

(Ayah56){وَ يَحْلِفُوْنَ بِاللّٰهِ …: ’’فَرِقَ يَفْرَقُ} (a) "To be extremely frightened and anxious, that is, these hypocrites cannot express their disbelief to you due to intense fear, nor can they dare to confront you, because in that case, they face a severe danger of being killed and their wives and children becoming slaves. Therefore, they swear oaths repeatedly to claim that they are among you. Hypocrisy creates fear of others and cowardice in a person."

56. 1. Due to this fear and dread, they swear false oaths to make you believe that they are also among you.

56. They swear by Allah that "we are surely with you," but they are not with you; rather, they are a people who are afraid [60].

The Helplessness and Compulsion of the Hypocrites:

These hypocrites were living in Medina in a state of extreme helplessness and destitution. They cherished disbelief in their hearts, but living in Medina, they could neither express nor declare it, because at that time the Islamic government had become a dominant power, and by expressing disbelief, they could be beaten not only by the Muslims but even by their own children. Nor could they leave Medina for another place, because in doing so, they would have to give up their properties, to which their lives were attached, and which were the result of their lifetime’s lawful and unlawful earnings. Therefore, they were compelled to adopt the path of hypocrisy. Yet, even in this state, they found no peace. Outwardly, they had to perform the five daily prayers and also give charity and alms, both of which were extremely unpleasant for them. Further humiliation was that the Muslims did not consider them Muslims, and their condition became like that of the washerman’s dog—belonging neither to the home nor to the riverbank. And they were cowardly in this respect: that they could not even share their miserable state with anyone.
