Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
So let not their wealth nor their children amaze you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم); in reality Allâh’s Plan is to punish them with these things in the life of this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah55) ➊ {فَلَاتُعْجِبْكَاَمْوَالُهُمْوَلَاۤاَوْلَادُهُمْ :} That is, do not be deceived by the wealth, children, and worldly glitter of these people, thinking that if Allah were displeased with them, why would they possess so much wealth and so many children? Rather, do not even cast a glance toward these things of theirs. See Surah Ta-Ha (131) and Al-Mu’minun (55, 56).
➋ { اِنَّمَايُرِيْدُاللّٰهُلِيُعَذِّبَهُمْبِهَافِيالْحَيٰوةِالدُّنْيَا:} That is, do not consider these things in the world to be a sign of happiness; Allah has only given them respite so that they remain preoccupied day and night with accumulating wealth and worrying about the protection of their children, neither finding peace during the day nor rest at night. The tranquility of the heart, which is attained only through the remembrance of Allah, i.e., «اَلَابِذِكْرِاللّٰهِتَطْمَىِٕنُّالْقُلُوْبُ»[ الرعد : ۲۸ ], they are completely deprived of this.
➌ { تَزْهَقَاَنْفُسُهُمْوَهُمْكٰفِرُوْنَ:} That is, until their last breath, they will not be granted the divine enablement (Tawfiq) to repent and bring true faith with a sincere heart; rather, when they die, their attention will be only toward their wealth and children, with no concern for the Hereafter nor any interest in Allah. Although a believer also cares for his wealth and children, since Allah’s pleasure takes precedence for him over all else, these things are blessings for him and not a source of misery.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
55. 1. Therefore, this is as a test, as it is said: "And many kinds of people whom We have provided with the adornments of the life of this world, so that We may test them—do We hasten for them good things in this world by giving them wealth and sons? (No), but they do not understand." 55. 2. Imam Ibn Kathir and Imam Ibn Jarir Tabari have taken this to mean Zakat and spending in the way of Allah. That is, the Zakat and charity given by these hypocrites (which they give to appear as Muslims) are accepted in this world so that in this way, their financial punishment is also given to them in this world. 55. 3. However, their death will come in a state of disbelief. Because they are not ready to sincerely accept the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they persist and insist on their disbelief and hypocrisy.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
55. Do not let their wealth and children amaze you. Allah only intends to punish them through these things in the life of this world [59], and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.
[59] How Were the Hypocrites Punished Through Wealth and Children?
All the hypocrites in Madinah were elderly and wealthy people, and the sole objective of the hypocrites was the attainment of worldly benefits. Therefore, like ordinary materialists and world-worshippers, for them too, the standard of honor and prestige was abundance of children and wealth. Now, the difficulty they faced was that their children became Muslims, for whom the standard of honor and prestige was completely opposite to theirs. In their eyes, the value of wealth and property was insignificant compared to obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and for them, the standard of honor and prestige was that the more devoted and obedient someone was to Allah’s Messenger, the more respected and honored he would be considered in the Islamic society. This ideological difference humiliated them even in the eyes of their own children. In this way, Allah punished them in this world through their very own children. And since they could not change their self-worshipping nature, they remained entangled in this cycle of delusion until death came to them, and they departed from this world with the same hypocrisy and humiliation.
