See they not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).

(Ayah 126) {اَوَلَايَرَوْنَاَنَّهُمْيُفْتَنُوْنَ … :} Most of the time, during war and jihad, the hypocrites would become known (but still they would persist in their hypocrisy). (Muwaddih) In the same way, every person faces some trial in the form of illness or fear, etc., once or twice every year, so that he may have the opportunity to reflect. It is said: «{ وَلَنُذِيْقَنَّهُمْمِّنَالْعَذَابِالْاَدْنٰىدُوْنَالْعَذَابِالْاَكْبَرِلَعَلَّهُمْيَرْجِعُوْنَ }»[ السجدۃ : ۲۱ ] "And surely, We will make them taste a portion of the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return." The fortunate ones are granted the ability to repent and take admonition from this, but the hypocrite remains deprived. The first meaning is more appropriate at this place.

126. 1. The meaning of یفتنون is "are tested." By calamity is meant either heavenly calamities such as famine, etc. (but this is unlikely), or physical illnesses and hardships, or the battles (ghazawat) in which they were tested at the time of participation. In the context of the discourse, this meaning is more correct.

126. Do they not see that they are afflicted with a calamity once or twice every year [145]? Yet they neither repent nor do they take heed.
[145] That is, there is not a single year in which, once or twice, their disgrace does not occur. Sometimes one of their conspiracies is uncovered, sometimes their secret is exposed. Sometimes a battle arises which becomes a test for their faith. Sometimes they themselves utter such nonsense that they are forced to face humiliation because of it. And whenever such an occasion arises, instead of coming to the straight path, they try to cover it up with deceit and lies. In this way, the impurity of their hearts continues to increase at every moment.
