Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 106) {وَاٰخَرُوْنَمُرْجَوْنَلِاَمْرِاللّٰهِ … :} Those who did not participate in the Battle of Tabuk and did not leave from Madinah were of three types: first, the hypocrites; second, Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions, whose mention has passed above; and third, Ka‘b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and his two companions, Murarah bin al-Rabi' and Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with them both), who, although they did not present any false excuse before the Prophet (peace be upon him), Allah Almighty did not accept their repentance quickly, rather, He postponed their matter. This verse mentions them, and the acceptance of their repentance is mentioned in a later verse.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
16. 1 In the Battle of Tabuk, those who stayed behind were, firstly, the hypocrites, and secondly, those who stayed behind without any excuse. And they admitted their mistake, but they were not granted forgiveness. In this verse, the group is mentioned whose matter was deferred (these were three individuals, whose mention is coming ahead). 16. 2 If they persist in their mistake. 16. 3 If they sincerely repent.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
106. And there are others whose case is deferred until Allah’s command arrives; whether He punishes them or accepts their repentance. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
[119] Types of Those Who Presented Excuses:
There were three types of people who stayed behind from the Battle of Tabuk. The first were the hypocrites, who were eighty or a little more in number, and they were presenting false excuses. The second were Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah and his six companions, who, before any questioning and answering, had tied themselves to the pillar of Masjid Nabawi; their story has already been mentioned earlier. The third were Sayyiduna Ka‘b bin Malikؓ and his two companions, Sayyiduna Hilal bin Umayyahؓ and Murarah bin al-Rabi'. These three were also true believers. They did not present any excuse or pretext before the Messenger of Allahﷺ, but instead openly told the truth. The matter concerning them was postponed by youﷺ until the command of Allah, and their story will be mentioned in detail ahead under verse number 118 of this Surah.
