(Ayah 5) ➊ For the meaning of {هَلْفِيْذٰلِكَقَسَمٌلِّذِيْحِجْرٍ : ’’ هَلْ ‘‘}, see the first verse of Surah Dahr. {’’حَجَرَيَحْجُرُ‘‘} (n) means to prevent, to stop. The intellect is called {’’ حِجْرٍ ‘‘} because it prevents and stops a person from every wrong action.
➋ The oaths mentioned in the Noble Qur’an generally come as testimony and evidence for something. The question arises: by swearing these oaths, what is being made to be believed by those of intellect? Although the answer is not present in words, it is clearly evident from the coming verses, that is, if you reflect on all these things, you will be convinced that the Lord who brings about such tremendous changes is capable of resurrecting you and giving you reward and punishment for your deeds, and if you persist in rebellion, then, like ‘Ad, Thamud, and the people of Pharaoh, He will rain down the whip of punishment upon you even in this world.

5. 1. "ذٰلِکَ" refers to the aforementioned oaths and things, meaning: Are these oaths not sufficient for people of intellect and understanding? "حجر" means prevention, prohibition; human intellect also prevents a person from wrong actions, which is why intellect is also called "حجر". Ahead, by way of testimony, Allah Almighty mentions some of those nations who were destroyed due to denial and stubbornness. The purpose is to warn the people of Makkah that if you do not refrain from denying Our Messenger, then you too can be seized in the same way as Allah seized the previous nations.

5. Surely in these there is indeed a solemn oath [5] for those who possess understanding.
[5] ﴿حِجر﴾ means stone and every solid and hard thing that can serve as a barrier. The intellect is also called "hijr" in the sense that it too prevents anything that is harmful. And ﴿ذي حجر﴾ means a person of intellect or an intelligent person. Another translation of this verse could be: Are these (aforementioned four things) not worthy of being sworn by in the eyes of the intelligent? The meaning in both cases is the same, that these mentioned things are very important parts of the system of the universe and hold great significance in their respective places. Then, can the Being who runs such a system of the universe not bring the Hereafter into existence?
