(Ayah 4,3) ➊ {عَامِلَةٌنَّاصِبَةٌ …:} No matter how much effort the disbeliever makes in this world, it will be blown away like dust on the Day of Resurrection. (See Furqan: 23) The same is the case for those who show off and those who abandon the Sunnah and perform self-invented deeds: despite their hard labor, they will enter Hell. (See the last section of Surah Kahf with exegesis) In view of this meaning, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) interpreted {’’ عَامِلَةٌنَّاصِبَةٌ ‘‘} as referring to the Christians. [ دیکھیے بخاري، التفسیر، باب سورۃ : «ہل أتاک حدیث الغاشیۃ» ، بعد ح : ۴۹۴۱ ] The severe ascetic practices of Christian monks are well known, but they will be of no benefit to them on the Day of Resurrection. In the same way, those who perform self-invented chants or acts of worship, or worship according to their own invented methods—whether standing on one leg, hanging upside down, holding their breath, imagining a created being as the polytheists do, or striking themselves—despite such severe hardships, they will be humiliated on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ يَرِدُعَلَيَّيَوْمَالْقِيَامَةِرَهْطٌمِّنْأَصْحَابِيْفَيُجْلَوْنَعَنِالْحَوْضِفَأَقُوْلُيَارَبِّ! أَصْحَابِيْ،فَيَقُوْلُإِنَّكَلاَعِلْمَلَكَبِمَاأَحْدَثُوْابَعْدَكَ،إِنَّهُمُارْتَدُّوْاعَلٰيأَدْبَارِهِمُالْقَهْقَرٰیفَأَقُوْلُسُحْقًاسُحْقًالِمَنْغَيَّرَبَعْدِيْ ][ بخاري، الرقاق، باب في الحوض : ۶۵۸۵، ۶۵۸۴ ] "On the Day of Resurrection, a group from among my companions will be presented to me, then they will be prevented from the Pond. So I will say: 'O my Lord! These are my companions.' Then Allah, the Exalted, will say: 'You do not know what new things they introduced after you; indeed, they turned back on their heels.' So I will say: 'Then take far away from me whoever changed after me, keep him away from me.'"
➋ {تَصْلٰىنَارًاحَامِيَةً: ’’ حَامِيَةً ‘‘ ’’حَمِيَيَحْمٰيحَمْيًا‘‘(س) ’’اَلنَّارُ‘‘} (The intense heat of the fire) is a feminine active participle, meaning extremely hot.

3. 1. That is, they will have such a severe and strenuous punishment that their condition will become extremely bad because of it. The second meaning is that they will be exhausted from their deeds in the world, meaning they kept performing many deeds, but those deeds were based on innovations according to a false religion, so despite worship and strenuous acts, they will enter Hell. Accordingly, in the spirit of this meaning, Ibn Abbas has taken (عَمِلَۃ،نَّاصِیَۃ) to refer to the Christians (Sahih Bukhari).

[3] Some commentators have related this verse to the Hereafter and have explained that such people will have collars around their necks and shackles on their feet. In this state, sometimes they will be ordered to climb some height and sometimes to descend. Because of this toil and hardship, they will become utterly exhausted. Others have related it to the world and have explained that they will have become weary from toil and striving in the world, but even their good deeds will be wasted due to shirk or some other reason, so such people will also be extremely fearful of their end.
