Surah Al-Inshiqaaq (84) — Ayah 6

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَـٰقِيهِ ﴿6﴾
O man! Verily, you are returning towards your Lord with your deeds and actions (good or bad), a sure returning, and you will meet (the results of your deeds which you did).
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ l-insānu mankind
إِنَّكَ innaka Indeed, you
كَادِحٌ kādiḥun (are) laboring
إِلَىٰ ilā to
رَبِّكَ rabbika your Lord
كَدْحًۭا kadḥan (with) exertion
فَمُلَـٰقِيهِ famulāqīhi and you (will) meet Him

(Ayah 6){ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الْاِنْسَانُ اِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ …: ’’ كَادِحٌ ‘‘ ’’كَدَحَ يَكْدَحُ‘‘} (F) To strive hard, to endure hardship, to inflict wounds. Through the word {’’ اِلٰى ‘‘}, the meaning of going towards the Lord Most High is being conveyed, that is, O human! Throughout your life, you remain engaged in some kind of toil, and in the end, carrying good or bad deeds, you will be presented before your Lord.

6. O human! You are laboring towards your Lord with (great) exertion and will meet Him. [4]

The Literal Meaning of ﴿كَدْحا﴾:

﴿كَدْحاً﴾ ﴿كَدَحَ﴾ means to work very hard at something; to do something while enduring hardships; to keep working at something with difficulty. The situation is such that a desire arises in a person's heart, and he sets out to fulfill it. Before that desire is even fully realized, another desire or desires arise in his heart. Then, after fulfilling the first desire, he girds himself to fulfill the next one, and in this way, his entire life passes by. It makes no difference whether the person having these desires is a worldly individual whose every desire revolves around attaining worldly benefits, or whether he is a religious and obedient servant of Allah who does everything for the attainment of benefits in the Hereafter. In terms of working hard, enduring hardships, and continuing to strive, the method of both is the same until death overtakes him and he automatically reaches the presence of Allah. Now, if someone keeps thinking that all his striving is limited only to the life of this world, this mistaken notion will not actually make any difference to reality, and he will only come to rest when he reaches his Lord.
