The Creation of the Heavens and Their Smoothing:

﴿سَمَكَ﴾ ﴿سَمَكَ﴾ means raising, making thick and dense, and also means roof or the thickness of a roof, as well as the stature of every high and thick thing. From this verse, it is clear that the sky is not merely the limit of vision as some modern astronomers think. Rather, the sky is a solid and thick or dense thing in which there are also doors, and the height of the sky is uniform from every point on the earth, because both its lower and upper surfaces have been made smooth.
