يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ ﴿10﴾
They say: "Shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state of life?

(Ayah 11,10) {يَقُوْلُوْنَ ءَاِنَّا لَمَرْدُوْدُوْنَ فِي … :} "When we have become decayed bones, will we really be returned to our former state?" 10. They (the disbelievers of Makkah) say: "Will we really be returned to our former state [8]?"

Literal Meaning of ﴿حافرة﴾:

﴿الحَافِرَةَ﴾ ﴿حفر﴾ means to dig a pit, and ﴿حفرة﴾ means both a pit and a grave. And ﴿حافرة﴾ means dug-up earth as well as the initial state, and ﴿ردّ فى الحافرة﴾ is used idiomatically, meaning to return to where one started from. As the poet says: "The dust reached the very place from where its essence was taken," meaning the disbelievers of Makkah used to say, "After reaching the pit of the grave, will we then be returned back to life, retracing our steps? Will life be restored to our decayed bones? This is something we cannot comprehend."
