وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌ ﴿24﴾
And some faces, that Day, will be Bâsirah (dark, gloomy, frowning, and sad),
وَوُجُوهٌۭ wawujūhun And faces
يَوْمَئِذٍۭ yawma-idhin that Day
بَاسِرَةٌۭ bāsiratun (will be) distorted

(Ayah 25,24) {وَ وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَىِٕذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌ …:’’ بَاسِرَةٌ ‘‘ ’’بَسَرَ يَبْسُرُ بُسُوْرًا‘‘} (n) To frown, to distort the face. {’’ فَاقِرَةٌ ‘‘} That severity which breaks the back. This is derived from {’’فَقَرَاتُ الظَّهْرِِ‘‘}, which means "vertebrae of the back." It is said: {’’فَقَرْتُ الرَّجُلَ‘‘} "I broke the vertebrae of that man's back."
