كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا ﴿16﴾
Nay! Verily, he has been opposing Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations).
كَلَّآ ۖ kallā By no means
إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, he
كَانَ kāna has been
لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا liāyātinā to Our Verses
عَنِيدًۭا ʿanīdan stubborn

(Ayah 16){ كَلَّا اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لِاٰيٰتِنَا عَنِيْدًا: ’’ عَنِيْدًا ‘‘} (N, D) One who opposes out of stubbornness despite recognizing the truth. The meaning of eternity is being derived from {’’ كَانَ ‘‘}, {’’ كَلَّا ‘‘} absolutely not. That is, his wish will never be fulfilled; he would have deserved further favor and kindness if he had accepted Our word, but he has always been a severe opponent of Our signs.
