وَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ ﴿82﴾

And the answer of his people was only that they said: "Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!"

(Ayah 82) {اِنَّهُمْ اُنَاسٌ يَّتَطَهَّرُوْنَ:} That is, what business do these pure people have among us sinners and impure ones? They said this with sarcasm and mockery, and what crime did they mention? That their crime is why they do not indulge in filth; expel them from your town. {’’يَّتَطَهَّرُوْنَ‘‘ } is from the verb form "tafa‘‘ul," one of whose meanings is also "affectation." In this case, their statement is not only sarcastic but also a slander, that these people pretend to be pure, whereas in reality, they are not pure.

82. 1. This is the reason for expelling Hazrat Lut from the town. As for the expression of their purity, either it is in reality, and their purpose was that these people want to avoid this evil, so it is better that they do not remain with us in our town, or they did so in mockery.

82. And his people had no answer except to say: "Expel them from your town! They are people who want to remain pure [87]."

[87] From the response of the people, it becomes clear that there were very few who believed in Sayyiduna Lut ؑ and abstained from this evil deed. When this people could not present any rational justification for their evil act, they resorted to a counter-accusation and said that we are the filthy ones, and Lut and his followers want to remain pure, so what business do they have among us filthy people? Therefore, they should be expelled from the town so that this daily dispute and quarrel may come to an end.
