۞ وَإِذَا صُرِفَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تِلْقَآءَ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ﴿47﴾
And when their eyes will be turned towards the dwellers of the Fire, they will say: "Our Lord! Place us not with the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers)."
۞ وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when
صُرِفَتْ ṣurifat are turned
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ abṣāruhum their eyes
تِلْقَآءَ til'qāa towards
أَصْحَـٰبِ aṣḥābi (the) companions
ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri (of) the Fire
قَالُوا۟ qālū they (will) say
رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord
لَا (Do) not
تَجْعَلْنَا tajʿalnā place us
مَعَ maʿa with
ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi the people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers

(Ayah 47) ➊ {وَ اِذَا صُرِفَتْ اَبْصَارُهُمْ: ’’ صُرِفَتْ ‘‘} is a passive verb form, which indicates that the people of A'raf will look towards the people of Paradise with longing and desire and will greet them with peace, but they will not even like to raise their eyes towards the people of Hell; rather, their eyes will be turned towards them so that they may realize the value of well-being. 47. And when their eyes are turned towards the people of Hell, they will say, "Our Lord! Do not place us among the wrongdoing people" [48].

The Dialogue of the People of A'raf with the People of Hell:

That is, the companions of A'raf will not even be willing to look towards the people of Hell, because they themselves will be in a state of fear and hope—they will be afraid of Hell and hopeful for Paradise. Therefore, when their eyes are turned towards the people of Hell, the first thing that will come out of their mouths will be: "O Allah! Do not include us among these wrongdoers." Then, when they do look, the very first thing they will ask the people of Hell will be: "Where is that group of yours today about whom you used to boast?" Just as when the verse of Surah Muddathir was revealed that "nineteen keepers are appointed over Hell," the disbelievers said, "We are in thousands; will not even ten of us be able to face one of them? Then one strong man among them said, 'I will take care of seventeen of them myself; for the remaining two, all of you together will not be enough.'" And the second thing they will say to the people of Hell is: "Look, only those people are entering Paradise whom you used to consider poor, destitute, and slaves, and used to think lowly of, and used to say, 'How can Allah's mercy be upon such people? And if it were to be, then even in this world they would have received some share of that mercy.'" It is to these very people that it is being said: "Today, enter Paradise without any fear or danger." In this way, the companions of A'raf will make clear to the people of Hell their falsehood, their arrogance, and their wrong notions.
