Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 152) ➊ {سَيَنَالُهُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّهِمْ وَ ذِلَّةٌ فِي الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا:} Allah’s wrath upon them was such that their repentance was not accepted until some of them killed others. (See Baqarah: 54) Among the Children of Israel, just as the punishment for intentional murder was death, similarly, the punishment for shirk was also death, and this was included in the {’’اِصْرٌ‘‘}—that is, the burden placed upon previous communities. In our Ummah, there has been a concession that the punishment for shirk is no longer death, but sincere repentance is sufficient for forgiveness. However, if one persists in shirk, then he is an apostate and should be killed.

{ وَ كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُفْتَرِيْنَ:} Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) recited this verse and said: “This is the punishment for every fabricator until the Day of Judgment (whether he invents acts of shirk in the religion or anything else).” Because anyone who introduces a new thing into the religion is a fabricator, and innovation is the worst kind of lie attributed to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). Imam Malik and Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on them both) said that “fabricators” means “innovators,” that is, the people of innovation, and every innovator will remain humiliated and disgraced until the Day of Judgment. (Qurtubi, Baghawi)

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

152. 1 Allah's wrath was that killing was made necessary for repentance. And before that, as long as they lived, they were deemed deserving of humiliation and disgrace.

152. 2 And this punishment is not specific to them alone; whoever fabricates (slanders) against Allah, We give him the same punishment.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

152. (Allah replied that) those who took the calf as a god—surely, wrath from their Lord [149] will overtake them, and they will be disgraced in the life of this world. This is how We recompense those who fabricate lies (against Allah).

The Mass Killing of the Calf-Worshippers:

The wrath of Allah mentioned here is the same as referred to in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 54, that such calf-worshipping polytheists should be killed so that the rest of society may be purified from shirk. Regarding the incident of calf-worship, the Children of Israel were divided into three groups: one group consisted of those who worshipped the calf; the second group did not worship it themselves but did not stop those who did; and the third group neither worshipped the calf nor ceased to forbid those who did. When these people realized the gravity of their great sin and requested repentance from Allah, He set the condition for the acceptance of their repentance that all the calf-worshipping polytheists should be killed, and those who would carry out the killing should be the ones who themselves had abstained from shirk and had also forbidden the polytheists from it.
