وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَآءِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ ۚ هَلْ يُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿147﴾
Those who deny Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and the Meeting in the Hereafter (Day of Resurrection,), vain are their deeds. Are they requited with anything except what they used to do?
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū denied
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا biāyātinā Our Signs
وَلِقَآءِ waliqāi and (the) meeting
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ l-ākhirati (of) the Hereafter
حَبِطَتْ ḥabiṭat worthless
أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ ۚ aʿmāluhum (are) their deeds
هَلْ hal Will

147. 1 In this, the fate of those who deny the signs of Allah and reject the commands is described: since the foundation of their deeds is not justice and truth but oppression and falsehood, therefore, their record of deeds will contain nothing but evil, which will have no value in the sight of Allah. And they will certainly be recompensed for this evil there.

147. And those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter, their deeds [144] have become worthless, and they will only be recompensed for what they used to do.

The Reason Why Disbelievers Do Not Receive Reward for Their Good Deeds:

This is because, for any deed to bear fruit, it is necessary that it be done for the pleasure of Allah and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And if a deed does not even contain the intention that it is being done with the hope of receiving its reward in the Hereafter, then how can it possibly receive any reward in the end? This will be the state of those deeds which are good, and as for those deeds which are in the form of disobedience and sin against Allah, their punishment will certainly be given, and it should be given. For if a person, while living on Allah’s earth, being His creation, and consuming His sustenance, acts against His will, then why should he not be punished? This very principle operates in this world: if a servant acts against the command of his master, or a subordinate against his officer, he receives punishment for it. And for any work that he does not do for his master, he never receives any reward from his master for it; he only receives reward for the work he does according to his master’s command or will.
