وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِٱلسِّنِينَ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ﴿130﴾
And indeed We punished the people of Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) with years of drought and shortness of fruits (crops), that they might remember (take heed).
وَلَقَدْ walaqad And certainly
أَخَذْنَآ akhadhnā We seized
ءَالَ āla (the) people
فِرْعَوْنَ fir'ʿawna (of) Firaun
بِٱلسِّنِينَ bil-sinīna with years (of famine)
وَنَقْصٍۢ wanaqṣin and a deficit
مِّنَ mina of
ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ l-thamarāti [the] fruits
لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum so that they may
يَذَّكَّرُونَ yadhakkarūna receive admonition

(Ayah 130){ وَ لَقَدْ اَخَذْنَاۤ اٰلَ فِرْعَوْنَ … :} In the above verse, when it was promised through the tongue of Musa (peace be upon him) that the time is near when your Lord will destroy your enemy, from here begins the mention of those hardships and calamities in which the people of Pharaoh were afflicted from time to time, until finally they were destroyed, so that these polytheists may be warned about disbelief and be made aware that the consequence of denying the prophets appears in the form of destruction. In the end, it is stated that these hardships and calamities were sent upon them so that they may take heed and refrain from their rebellion, because in times of calamity, hearts become soft and turn towards Allah.

130. 1. By "Aal Fir'awn" is meant the people of Pharaoh. And "sineen" refers to drought. That is, due to lack of rain and infestation of trees by insects, there was a decrease in produce. The purpose of this trial was that they might refrain from the oppression and arrogance in which they were involved.
