The Awe of Pharaoh and His Courtiers:
From these verses it is understood that after hearing the words of Musa (Moses), Pharaoh and the Egyptians truly became apprehensive that this man could bring about a revolution in the country. There were several reasons for this: one was that Musa (Moses) had been raised among them, had learned the arts of war, and in fact, during an expedition against Abyssinia, he had been sent as a commander and had returned successful and triumphant. He was courageous, bold, and possessed a strong stature, and everyone acknowledged his truthfulness. Secondly, Musa (Moses) had made it clear that he was the messenger of that Allah whom they themselves acknowledged as the Supreme Lord. He also said that he was conveying exactly what his Lord had told him. Thirdly, his miracles had awed and terrified both Pharaoh and the Egyptians. And when these people called Musa (Moses) a magician, it was merely a childish consolation, a way to soothe their hearts, to buy time, and to keep the common people in the dark, hoping that with the passage of time, circumstances might take a different turn. Otherwise, who does not know that no magician has ever brought about a political revolution, nor can he do so.
