فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ ﴿5﴾
As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by the awful cry!
فَأَمَّا fa-ammā So as for
ثَمُودُ thamūdu Thamud
فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ fa-uh'likū they were destroyed
بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ bil-ṭāghiyati by the overpowering (blast)

(Ayah 5) {فَاَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَاُهْلِكُوْا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ:’’اَلطَّاغِيَةُ‘‘ ’’طَغٰي يَطْغٰي‘‘} is an active participle from (ف), it can also be a verbal noun like {’’عَافِيَةٌ‘‘}. If it is an active participle, then the meaning of {’’ اَلطَّاغِيَةُ ‘‘} is "one who exceeds the limit," and it will be an attribute of {’’ الرَّجْفَةُ ‘‘} or {’’ الصَّيْحَةُ ‘‘} or {’’ الصّٰعِقَةُ ‘‘}, meaning that Thamud were destroyed by that earthquake or sound or thunderclap which greatly exceeded the limits of sounds. This was the voice of an angel or a thunderclap accompanied by an earthquake, or a terrifying sound that came with the earthquake. If it is a verbal noun, then the meaning is "to exceed the limit," and "ba" will be causative: {’’أَيْ بِطُغْيَانِهِمْ‘‘} meaning Thamud were destroyed because of their exceeding the limit, as He said: « كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُوْدُ بِطَغْوٰىهَا » [ الشمس : ۱۱ ] "The people of Thamud denied (Salih عليه السلام) because of their rebellion."

What Kind of Punishment Befell the People of Thamud? By What Punishment Were the Thamud Destroyed?

For this, different words have been used at different places. In Surah Al-A'raf, verse 87, it is called ﴿الرَّجْفَةُ﴾ (a mighty earthquake). In Surah Hud, verse 67, the word ﴿الصَّيْحَةُ﴾ (a terrible blast or dreadful scream) is used, and in Surah Ha Mim As-Sajdah, verse 17, the word ﴿صَاعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ﴾ (i.e., the punishment of a falling thunderbolt) is used, and here the word ﴿الطَّاغِيَةَ﴾ is used, which conveys the meaning of a punishment of extreme severity. These are descriptions of different aspects of the same event. And that punishment was that both earthly and heavenly types of punishment descended upon the people of Thamud simultaneously.
