Surah Al-Haaqqa (69) — Ayah 25

وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ ﴿25﴾
But as for him who will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "I wish that I had not been given my Record!
وَأَمَّا wa-ammā But as for
مَنْ man (him) who
أُوتِىَ ūtiya is given
كِتَـٰبَهُۥ kitābahu his record
بِشِمَالِهِۦ bishimālihi in his left hand
فَيَقُولُ fayaqūlu will say
يَـٰلَيْتَنِى yālaytanī O! I wish
لَمْ lam not
أُوتَ ūta I had been given
كِتَـٰبِيَهْ kitābiyah my record

(Ayah 25 to 29) {وَ اَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِيَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِشِمَالِهٖ … :} Those who will be given their record of deeds in their left hand will say, in great distress, the words mentioned in these verses. These people who receive their record in their left hand will be disbelievers, as is evidenced by the upcoming verse (33): « اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ الْعَظِيْمِ» "He did not believe in the Most Great Allah." The believers will be given their record in their right hand, but regarding those believers who will spend some time in the Fire, there is a difference of opinion as to whether they will receive their record before entering the Fire or after coming out of it. The preferred opinion is that they will receive it after coming out of the Fire, because after receiving the record, if they were being sent to the Fire, words of happiness like {’’ هَآؤُمُ اقْرَءُوْا كِتٰبِيَهْ ‘‘} could not come from their mouths. (Al-Tasheel)

{’’يَالَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِيَةَ‘‘} That is, if only death had finished me off and I had not been raised again. {’’ مَاۤ اَغْنٰى عَنِّيْ مَالِيَهْ (28) هَلَكَ عَنِّيْ سُلْطٰنِيَهْ ‘‘} Regarding the greed for wealth and leadership, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَا ذِئْبَانِ جََائِعَانِ أُرْسِلَا فِيْ غَنَمٍ بِأَفْسَدَ لَهَا مِنْ حِرْصِ الْمَرْءِ عَلَی الْمَالِ وَالشَّرَفِ لِدِيْنِهٖ ] [ترمذي، الزھد، باب ما ذئبان جائعان… : ۲۳۷۶، قال الألباني صحیح ] "Two hungry wolves let loose among sheep do not cause as much destruction as a man's greed for wealth and leadership does to his religion." After spending his entire life striving to attain these two things, at that time he will regretfully say that my wealth was of no use to me and my leadership has also been destroyed. If {’’ سُلْطٰنِيَهْ ‘‘ ’’سُلْطَانٌ‘‘} refers to argument and proof, then it means all my arguments and contentions, with which I used to silence the people of truth, are useless today; and if it refers to leadership and authority, then it means all my power is finished today. Those groups and parties, those troops and police squads, those family members, those servants over whom I used to command, all have disappeared. Let alone having authority over others, even my own limbs have refused to acknowledge my leadership, rather, they are testifying against me. {’’ سُلْطٰنِيَهْ ‘‘} can refer to both argument and proof, as well as authority and leadership.
