(Ayah 9){ وَدُّوْالَوْتُدْهِنُفَيُدْهِنُوْنَ : ’’ تُدْهِنُ ‘‘ ’’دُهْنٌ‘‘} is derived from (oil). Just as leather, etc., is softened by applying oil, in the same way, to soften a matter. That is, their desire is that you reduce your activities in the propagation of Islam, so they will also reduce persecuting you; if you make some amendments in your religion and make some allowance for their polytheism and other misguidances, then they will also make peace with you. You may do whatever you wish, but if you stop insisting on the implementation of Allah’s command in every aspect of people’s lives, such as their beliefs, economy, society, and government, etc., then they will tolerate your prayers and fasting, just as secular people always say even today that religion is a personal matter and should have no role in government. Remember! What Allah Almighty has forbidden is softening the matter, not softening the tone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is being informed that being of great character does not mean that you should soften your stance and beliefs to appease the disbelievers. As for gentleness in manner and tone, that is also a requirement of your great character and Allah’s command as well. In other words, you are being forbidden from compromise (mudahanat), not from courteous conduct (mudarat).

9. 1 They want you to adopt a lenient attitude regarding their deities, so they too will adopt a lenient attitude regarding you. The followers of falsehood will become lax in abandoning their false worship. Therefore, flattery in the matter of truth is extremely harmful to wisdom, preaching, and the prophetic mission.

They wish that you would compromise, so they would [7] compromise as well.
[7] The Disbelievers’ Attempt at Compromise Between Truth and Falsehood:
The demand of the disbelievers was that you ﷺ should stop speaking ill of our idols. You ﷺ, God forbid, did not abuse their idols, but only said that these idols can neither harm nor benefit anyone. They have no power or authority over anything. However, since for generations these disbelievers had held the belief that their deities could both harm and benefit them, they considered your ﷺ teaching an insult to themselves, to their forefathers, and to their idols. Their only demand was that you ﷺ should not say anything about their deities, nor utter any disrespectful or insulting words about them. In return, they would not say anything of the sort about your deity. In response, Allah Almighty said that there can never be a compromise between truth and falsehood. Even if, hypothetically, you were to accept any of their demands, such a compromise or reconciliation would be of no benefit, because these are liars. They do not stand by any of their words. Their real purpose is only to deny the verses of Allah Almighty.
