قُلْ هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنشَأَكُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۖ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ ﴿23﴾

Say it is He Who has created you, and endowed you with hearing (ears) and seeing (eyes), and hearts. Little thanks you give.

(Ayah 23) {قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِيْۤ اَنْشَاَكُمْ … :} It is Allah alone who created you and granted you ears, eyes, and hearts. Now, the gratitude for creating you was that you worship only Him, and the gratitude for granting you ears, eyes, and hearts was that you use them only where the pleasure of the One who gave these blessings lies, and through them seek the path of His approval. But you neither listened to the truth with your ears, nor took heed by seeing Allah’s signs with your eyes, nor tried to understand His oneness with your heart. Out of countless blessings, these three blessings are mentioned because these three are sources of knowledge; it is through them that a person can reach the truth. In this verse, the address is to the disbelievers, and by {’’ قَلِيْلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُوْنَ ‘‘} (little do you give thanks) it is meant that you do not give thanks at all.

3. 1. That is, it is Allah alone who creates for the first time. 23. 2. That is, He made ears, eyes, and hearts so that you may hear and, by reflecting on Allah’s creation, attain knowledge of Allah. Three faculties are mentioned by which a person can perceive what is heard, what is seen, and what is understood. This is, in a way, a completion of the argument, and also a condemnation for not being grateful for these blessings of Allah. That is why it is further stated that you show very little gratitude. 23. 2. That is, "shukran qaleelan" or "zamnan qaleelan" or by the paucity of gratitude is meant the absence of gratitude from their side.

23. Say, "It is He who created you and made for you hearing, sight [26], and hearts; little are you grateful."

[26] Eyes, ears, and hearts—each one of these blessings is such that it is equal to a thousand other blessings. If any one of them is taken away from you, then you realize their true value. Yet you seldom give thanks for these great blessings of Allah. The other meaning is that Allah did not give you eyes, ears, and hearts merely so that you use them as animals do. Rather, He gave them so that you may observe Allah’s signs with your eyes, listen to Allah’s verses and commands with your ears, and then reflect upon them with your hearts. But the state of the disbelievers is such that not only do they fail to give thanks for these blessings, they actually use them in opposition to Allah’s path.
