قَدْ فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ تَحِلَّةَ أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ﴿2﴾
Allâh has already ordained for you (O men) the absolution from your oaths. And Allâh is your Maulâ (Lord, or Master, or Protector) and He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.
قَدْ qad Indeed
فَرَضَ faraḍa has ordained
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
لَكُمْ lakum for you
تَحِلَّةَ taḥillata (the) dissolution
أَيْمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ aymānikum (of) your oaths
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ mawlākum (is) your Protector
وَهُوَ wahuwa and He
ٱلْعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu (is) the All-Knower
ٱلْحَكِيمُ l-ḥakīmu the All-Wise

(Ayah 2) ➊ The verbal noun (masdar) of {قَدْ فَرَضَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ تَحِلَّةَ اَيْمَانِكُمْ : ’’ تَحِلَّةَ ‘‘ ’’حَلَّلَ‘‘} (taf‘īl) comes as both {’’ تَحْلِيْلٌ ‘‘} and {’’ تَحِلَّةٌ ‘‘}, just as the verbal noun of {’’ كَرَّمَ ‘‘} comes as both {’’تَكْرِيْمٌ‘‘} and {’’تَكْرِمَةٌ ‘‘}. The meaning is to make lawful; what is meant is the expiation for an oath, after performing which that thing becomes lawful which was made unlawful by swearing an oath. That is, the honey and Mariyah which you made unlawful by swearing an oath, give the expiation for that oath. Allah Almighty has explained the expiation for an oath in Surah Al-Ma'idah (89). Abu Musa Al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ وَ إِنِّيْ وَاللّٰهِ! إِنْ شَاءَ اللّٰهُ لاَ أَحْلِفُ عَلٰی يَمِيْنٍ فَأَرٰی غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا إِلاَّ كَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِيْنِيْ ، وَأَتَيْتُ الَّذِيْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ ] [بخاري، الأیمان والنذور، باب قول اللّٰہ تعالٰی : « لایؤاخذکم اللّٰہ …» : ۶۶۲۳ ] “By Allah! If Allah wills, if I swear an oath on any matter, then I see something else better than it, I will offer the expiation for my oath and do that which is better.” If someone swears an oath on any matter unlawful, it is necessary to break it and give its expiation.

➋ The meaning of { وَ اللّٰهُ مَوْلٰىكُمْ وَ هُوَ الْعَلِيْمُ الْحَكِيْمُ : ’’مَوْلٰي‘‘} is owner, friend, helper. That is, Allah Almighty is your owner, your helper, and is extremely merciful to you. That is why He has forbidden you from such things that would put you in difficulty, and if you fall into such difficulty by swearing an oath, He has also shown you the way out of it, because: «يُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَ لَا يُرِيْدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ » [ البقرۃ : ۱۸۵ ] “Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you.” And He is the One who knows everything and is perfect in wisdom, so there is no error in any of His commands, because all His commands are based on perfect knowledge and wisdom.

2. 1. That is, after paying the expiation, permission has been granted to do the act which one had sworn not to do. The expiation for an oath is mentioned in Surah Ma'idah, 89. Thus, the Prophet ﷺ also paid the expiation (Fath al-Qadeer). There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding the ruling if a person declares something unlawful upon himself. According to the majority of scholars, declaring anything other than one's wife unlawful does not make that thing unlawful, nor is expiation required for it. If a person declares his wife unlawful upon himself, then if his intention is divorce, divorce will take place; and if he does not intend divorce, then according to the preferred opinion, this is considered an oath, and paying the expiation is necessary for it. Allah has prescribed for you the dissolution of your (unlawful) oaths [2]. Allah is your Protector, and He is the All-Knowing, the Wise [3].

[2] The detailed mention of the expiation for oaths has already passed under verse 89 of Surah Al-Ma'idah. The meaning is that you should break the vow and oath you made regarding making a lawful thing unlawful upon yourself, by paying the expiation for the oath.

[3] That is, Allah is the guardian and protector of all your affairs. The things He has prescribed are also based on His knowledge and wisdom, and those He has made unlawful are also unlawful due to His knowledge and wisdom. Your duty is simply to obey His commands, whether you understand the wisdom behind a command or not.
