Allâh sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nûh (Noah) and the wife of Lût (Lot). They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed them (their husbands by rejecting their doctrine). So they [Nûh (Noah) and Lût (Lot) عليهما السلام] availed them (their respective wives) not against Allâh and it was said: "Enter the Fire along with those who enter!"

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 10) ➊ { ضَرَبَ اللّٰهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوا امْرَاَتَ نُوْحٍ وَّ امْرَاَتَ لُوْطٍ …:} After the command to strive against the disbelievers and hypocrites, the evil of disbelief and the blessing of faith are described, that on the Day of Resurrection, no kind of kinship with a Muslim will benefit a disbeliever, even if the wife of a prophet is a disbeliever, that prophet will not be able to save her from entering Hell. Previously, in the Holy Qur’an, examples of blood relations have been mentioned in the form of the son of Noah (peace be upon him) and the father of Abraham (peace be upon him). Here, the wives of Noah (peace be upon him) and Lot (peace be upon him) are mentioned as examples of disbelieving people. Some people have said that this story was told to the pure wives, but this is wrong and baseless, because in this verse, disbelieving women are mentioned, whose husbands could not benefit them due to their disbelief and they were cast into the Fire. How can the Mothers of the Believers be compared to them, about whom the Holy Qur’an has testified to their faith, piety, and purity!? The truth is that the story of the pure wives has ended above, and the subject of this verse is related to {’’ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا قُوْۤا اَنْفُسَكُمْ ‘‘}, because the benefit of believing relatives to their believing kin is established in the Holy Qur’an (Tur: 21) and in the hadiths of intercession.
➋ In the books of exegesis, the names of the wives of Noah and Lot (peace be upon them) have been mentioned differently, but none is established with an authentic chain.
{ فَخَانَتٰهُمَا :} Allah Almighty has not mentioned what that betrayal was, nor has it been mentioned in any authentic way. If it had been necessary, Allah Almighty would certainly have mentioned it; keeping it ambiguous seems to have the wisdom that a person should remain fearful of every kind of betrayal.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

10. 1 The meaning of a parable is to describe such a condition in which there is uniqueness and strangeness, so that through it, another condition may be introduced which is similar to it in uniqueness and strangeness. The meaning here is that for the state of these disbelievers, Allah has presented a parable, which is that of the wives of Nuh and Lut (علیہما السلام).

10. 2 Here, betrayal means that they did not bring faith upon their husbands, remained involved in hypocrisy, and their sympathies remained with their disbelieving nations. For example, the wife of Nuh (علیہ السلام) used to say to people about Nuh (علیہ السلام) that he is insane, and the wife of Lut (علیہ السلام) used to inform her people about the guests who came to the house. Some say that both of them used to backbite about their husbands among their people.

10. 3 That is, both Nuh and Lut (علیہما السلام), despite the fact that they were prophets of Allah, who are among the closest servants to Allah, could not save their wives from Allah’s punishment.

10. 4 This will be said to them on the Day of Resurrection or it was said to them at the time of death. The special purpose of mentioning this example of the disbelievers here is to warn the noble wives that although they are the adornment of the sanctuary of the Messenger who is the best among all creation, they should remember that if they oppose the Messenger or cause him harm, they too can come under Allah’s grasp, and if that happens, then there will be no one to save them.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

10. Allah sets forth the example for the disbelievers: the wives of Noah and Lot. They were married to two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed their husbands [21], so their husbands could not avail them at all against Allah [22]. It was said to them: "Enter the Fire along with those who enter."

[21] This betrayal was neither a betrayal of wealth nor of chastity, because it is explicitly stated in the hadith that no wife of any prophet ever committed immorality. Rather, it was a betrayal of faith and its requirements. The path of the prophets was one, and the path of these wives was another. The wife of Sayyiduna Nuh was also a disbeliever and considered her husband, Sayyiduna Nuh, to be insane and would say so. The sympathies of the wife of Sayyiduna Lut were also entirely with the disbelievers instead of her husband, because she was from their people. Whenever a guest would come to the house, she would inform her neighbors.
[22] That is, neither did being the wives of prophets or living in the company of prophets benefit these women in any way, nor could the prophets save them from Allah’s punishment. The wife of Sayyiduna Nuh also drowned and died with those who were drowned, and the wife of Sayyiduna Lut was also afflicted with punishment along with her people. This was their fate in this world. In the Hereafter as well, these prophets will not be able to save their wives from Allah’s punishment. From this, it is understood that if there is no true faith in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, then even the closest of relationships can neither benefit in this world nor in the Hereafter. Being born into a prophetic or noble lineage is not such an honor that one can rely on or be proud of. And this disease was common among the People of the Book and is also present among Muslims.
