Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 5) ➊ { اَلَمْيَاْتِكُمْنَبَؤُاالَّذِيْنَكَفَرُوْامِنْقَبْلُفَذَاقُوْاوَبَالَاَمْرِهِمْ:} That is, if you do not believe in your Creator and persist in disbelief against the One who possesses these attributes and to whom you have to return, have you not heard of those people who, before you, denied not only their Creator and Master but also His messengers and the Hereafter? For example, the people of Noah, ‘Ad, Thamud, and the people of Pharaoh, etc., who were far greater than you in wealth, power, and might. (See: Rum: 9) The Quraysh of Makkah would often pass by the ruins of their destroyed settlements during their journeys to Syria and Yemen, and their stories were well-known in Arabia.
➋ { فَذَاقُوْاوَبَالَاَمْرِهِمْوَلَهُمْعَذَابٌاَلِيْمٌ:} That is, they tasted the consequences of their disbelief and rebellion even in this world, but this was not their complete and real punishment; rather, it was only the result of their evil deeds in this world, shown as a lesson for others, from which you too should take heed. As their real punishment, a most painful torment has been prepared for them.

5. 1 That is, in addition to the worldly punishment, in the Hereafter as well. 5. 2 This is an indication towards that punishment which they received in the world and will also receive in the Hereafter.

5. Has there not come to you the news of those who disbelieved before? Then they tasted the evil consequence [10] of their deeds, and for them is a painful punishment.
[10] By "those people" are meant the previous nations upon whom punishment came due to their disobedience to Allah. And this punishment was neither their real punishment nor their complete punishment. This torment was given to them only so that they might refrain from future crimes and the oppressed might be saved from their oppression. In this sense, this worldly punishment is merely like the arrest of a criminal. As for the real and complete punishment, that will be given to them in the Hereafter.
