The Jews’ Love for a Humiliating Worldly Life and the Fortification of All Jewish Tribes Instead of Fighting:

Their love for worldly life and their escape from death is such that they prefer even the most humiliating life over death. This greed for life has made them a cowardly nation despite their abundance of wealth, resources, weaponry, and supplies. They are very clever and sharp in boasting, but extremely cowardly in confrontation. For this reason, none of the three Jewish tribes fought the Muslims in the open field. Banu Qaynuqa also fortified themselves, as did Banu Nadir and Banu Qurayza. Because the Jews feared death, whereas the Muslims loved death very much. In this verse, Allah Almighty has said that the death from which you want to escape at all costs will surely come to you. And you will have to be presented before Allah. Then He will tell you whether you were Allah’s beloved and favored ones, or whether you were caught in His curse and anger.
