(Ayah 87) {وَمِنْاٰبَآىِٕهِمْ…:} That is, their fathers and forefathers up to the top, and their sons, grandsons, great-grandsons down to the bottom, and among their brothers, whoever were believers, We also guided them and granted them honor. (Ibn Kathir)

87. 1. By "آبا" are meant the ancestors as the roots, and by "ذریات" are meant the descendants as the branches. That is, from among these roots and branches and brothers, We have granted many the rank of guidance. The meaning of آجتِیْبِآءُ is to select and to count among one's special servants and to join them with oneself. It is derived from جَبِبْتُالمَآءَفِیالحَوضِ (I have filled the cistern with water). Thus, to join among one's special servants. "اصطفاء" (Istifa), "تخلیص" (purification), and "اختیار" (selection) are also used in this sense. Its object is "مصطفیٰ", "مجتبی", "مخلص", and "مختار" (Fath al-Qadeer).

87. And from among their fathers, their descendants, and their brothers, We chose some of them and guided them to the straight path [88].
[88] Besides this group of all these Prophets (peace be upon them), We also blessed many people from among their fathers, forefathers, families, descendants, and their brothers with guidance towards the straight path. And the noteworthy aspect of this guidance is that they were monotheists and extremely averse to polytheism, because polytheism is such an evil calamity that if even the aforementioned Prophets had committed it, all their deeds would have been rendered void. This statement is made for the sake of argument and as a severe warning for others; otherwise, it is impossible for Prophets to commit polytheism. In fact, the very purpose of the Prophets’ mission is to eradicate polytheism and to connect the servants directly to Allah Almighty.
