Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened for them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment), and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 44) ➊ { فَلَمَّانَسُوْامَاذُكِّرُوْابِهٖ …:} When they completely forgot Allah and His commands, Allah extended their rope for them to establish proof against them, and opened for them the doors of every kind of blessing. Then, when they became fully engrossed in luxury and comfort, Allah seized them suddenly, that is, a sudden punishment came upon them so that they forgot all their luxury and comfort, and they had no hope of escape, and in that very state of despair and hopelessness, they were destroyed and ruined. A wise person should, when hardship and difficulty come, consider it a warning from Allah and repent from evil deeds, otherwise heedlessness will increase and suddenly such a severe seizure will come that there will not even be an opportunity to repent. {’’ مُّبْلِسُوْنَ ‘‘} This is the plural of {’’ مُبْلِسٌ‘‘}, meaning one whose hope is lost. ➋ {فَتَحْنَاعَلَيْهِمْاَبْوَابَكُلِّشَيْءٍ:} From this verse it is understood that if, despite disbelief, polytheism, and disobedience to Allah, any nation is extremely developed and prosperous in terms of worldly wealth, it should not be thought that Allah is pleased with them; rather, this is istidraj and is extremely dangerous for them. See Surah Al-Imran (178).

[47] Allah’s Law Regarding Punishment in This World:
In these verses, Allah Almighty has described His law of accountability. What happens is that when disobedience to Allah begins in a nation, He sends upon them light punishments, such as famine, drought, or some epidemic, etc. And this punishment comes as a warning or alert so that people may fear Allah’s grasp and turn to Him in repentance and humility. If the nation truly takes heed and turns towards Allah, then even that hardship is removed from them, and henceforth, Allah’s mercies begin to descend upon them. But if they do not repent and continue to increase in disobedience and rebellion, then another kind of punishment befalls them, which is the abundance of luxury and ease. People become so engrossed in it that they completely forget Allah and think that their civilization, culture, and national economy are progressing. Then, suddenly, a severe punishment comes upon them that utterly destroys that nation and wipes it off the face of the earth, making it a thing of the past.
