Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
We know indeed the grief which their words cause you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): it is not you that they deny, but it is the Verses (the Qur’ân) of Allâh that the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) deny.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 33) {قَدْنَعْلَمُاِنَّهٗلَيَحْزُنُكَ … :} Before the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) claimed prophethood, all the people of his tribe used to call him Sadiq (truthful) and Ameen (trustworthy), but as soon as he announced his prophethood and began to recite to them the verses of Allah, most of them became determined to oppose him and (God forbid) started calling him a liar. Abu Sufyan, who was the cause of the battles of Badr, Uhud, and Khandaq, was asked by the Roman emperor Heraclius whether Muhammad (peace be upon him) had ever lied, and despite being a disbeliever, he replied that Muhammad (peace be upon him) had never lied. In this regard, Allah Almighty has comforted the Prophet (peace be upon him) that those who are denying you are, in reality, not denying you but are denying Our verses, because from a personal perspective, they cannot deny you at all; your forty years before prophethood are proof of this. By them are meant those disbelievers who considered it impossible for a human to be a prophet and messenger. (Ibn Kathir, Razi)
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
33. 1. The Prophet ﷺ, due to the denial from the disbelievers, would feel sorrow and distress, and for the removal of this and for your comfort, it is being said that this denial is not of you. (They consider you truthful and trustworthy.) In reality, this is the denial of the divine verses, and this is the injustice that they are committing. In a narration of Tirmidhi and others, it is mentioned that Abu Jahl once said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "O Muhammad ﷺ, we do not deny you, but rather what you have brought." Upon this, this verse was revealed. Although this narration of Tirmidhi is weak in its chain, other Sahih narrations confirm that the disbelievers of Makkah acknowledged the trustworthiness, honesty, and truthfulness of the Prophet ﷺ, but despite this, they refrained from believing in your Prophethood. Even today, those who eloquently and passionately describe the noble character, elevated conduct, trustworthiness, and truthfulness of the Prophet ﷺ, and who display great eloquence and rhetoric on this subject, but feel reluctance in following the Messenger ﷺ, and prefer jurisprudence, analogy, and the statements of the Imams over your words, they should reflect on whose character it is that they have adopted?
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
33. (O Muhammad ﷺ!) We know indeed that what they say grieves you. But it is not you that these wrongdoers deny; rather, they are denying the signs [37] of Allah.
[37] The Disbelievers of Makkah Denied Not You, But the Signs of Allah:
Before prophethood, the polytheists of Makkah used to call you truthful and trustworthy. Even after the declaration of prophethood, none of your greatest enemies ever called you a liar in worldly matters. However, whatever you said regarding religion, the disbelievers would deny it. Thus, once Abu Jahl himself said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Muhammad! We do not call you a liar, but we deny what you have brought." At that time, this verse was revealed [ترمذي۔ ابواب التفسير], and one major reason for this denial was the tribal prejudice of the Quraysh. Abu Jahl, who belonged to the tribe of Banu Makhzum, once said, "We and Banu Abd Manaf (the family of Hashim) have always been rivals. If they showed hospitality, we also did so. If they paid blood money, we also did so. If they were generous, we also were generous, until we became equal with them. Now Banu Hashim claim prophethood. By Allah, we can never believe in this Prophet, nor will we ever affirm him." [ابن هشام ص 108] Thus, in personal terms, the Quraysh of Makkah had no complaint against you. Their opposition and enmity towards you was solely because of the call to religion. Therefore, Allah Almighty, comforting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, says that these people are not denying you, but these wrongdoers are denying Us and Our signs. Do not be overly distressed; We will deal with them Ourselves.
