Surah Al-An'aam (6) — Ayah 25

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا ۚ وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءُوكَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿25﴾
And of them there are some who listen to you; but We have set veils on their hearts, so they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; and even if they see every one of the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) they will not believe therein; to the point that when they come to you to argue with you, the disbelievers say: "These are nothing but tales of the men of old."
وَمِنْهُم wamin'hum And among them
مَّن man (are those) who
يَسْتَمِعُ yastamiʿu listen
إِلَيْكَ ۖ ilayka to you
وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā but We have placed
عَلَىٰ ʿalā over
قُلُوبِهِمْ qulūbihim their hearts
أَكِنَّةً akinnatan coverings
أَن an lest
يَفْقَهُوهُ yafqahūhu they understand it
وَفِىٓ wafī and in
ءَاذَانِهِمْ ādhānihim their ears
وَقْرًۭا ۚ waqran deafness
وَإِن wa-in And if
يَرَوْا۟ yaraw they see
كُلَّ kulla every
ءَايَةٍۢ āyatin sign
لَّا not
يُؤْمِنُوا۟ yu'minū will they believe
بِهَا ۚ bihā in it
حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā Until
إِذَا idhā when
جَآءُوكَ jāūka they come to you
يُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ yujādilūnaka and argue with you
يَقُولُ yaqūlu say
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
كَفَرُوٓا۟ kafarū disbelieved
إِنْ in Not
هَـٰذَآ hādhā (is) this
إِلَّآ illā but
أَسَـٰطِيرُ asāṭīru (the) tales
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)

(Ayah 25) {وَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ يَّسْتَمِعُ اِلَيْكَ … :} That is, they listen attentively. When, on the Day of Resurrection, some conditions that will befall the previous disbelievers were described, then the state of the present disbelievers was also mentioned. (Razi) It is stated that the polytheists come to you and listen to the Qur'an with great attention, but due to stubbornness and hostility, their purpose is not to seek guidance, so listening does not benefit them at all, because as a punishment for recognizing the truth but not accepting it and due to their ill intentions, We have placed veils over their hearts and plugs in their ears, because of which, despite listening attentively, they neither understand nor truly hear. See also Surah Al-A'raf (179). Now, if they did not believe after seeing such a great miracle as the Qur'an, then do not expect that they will believe after seeing any other miracle. Even though they know the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Qur'an to be true, their stubbornness and hostility have reached such a point that when they come to you and argue, and these deniers cannot find any answer to your clear proofs, they say that these are the fabricated tales of the former people, even though the Qur'an contains teachings of morality, wisdom, and law, and the stories mentioned in it are all true events and are narrated only for admonition and advice.

25. 1 That is, the polytheists come to you and listen to the Quran, but since their purpose is not to seek guidance, it is therefore useless.

25. 2 In addition, as a result of their disbelief, We have placed coverings over their hearts and plugs in their ears, due to which their hearts are unable to understand the truth and their ears are incapable of hearing the truth.

25. 3 Now they are trapped in such a swamp of misguidance that even if they see the greatest miracle, they will still be deprived of the ability to believe, and their stubbornness and denial have increased to such an extent that they call the Noble Quran the unsupported tales of the former people.

25. Among them are some who listen to you, but We have placed veils over their hearts so they do not understand, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it. To the extent that when they come to you to argue, the disbelievers say, "This is nothing but tales of the ancients." [29]

Why Are the Attributes Attributed to Allah Almighty?

They listen attentively only to see which points they can object to and which points they can mock. Their intention can never be sincere, that they come to seek guidance. Therefore, they ignore the words of guidance as if, due to hardness of hearing, they could not hear them at all. And when they do not listen, how will they even try to understand? Here, it should be understood that adopting the means is within a person's own control, and this is what we have been commanded to do. But the outcomes of those means, or the results produced from those means, are not within human control; rather, they are in Allah's control. For example, the task of a prophet is to call people towards Allah. Now, whether people accept his invitation or reject it, or how many accept and how many do not, this is not within the prophet's control, but rather within Allah's control. However, most of the time, the expected results are achieved by adopting the means, and even such results will be attributed to Allah. In this regard, Allah Almighty has attributed the results to Himself by saying ﴿وَّجَعَلْنَا عَليٰ قُلُوْبِهِمْ اَكِنَّةً﴾, otherwise, the real criminals are those people who adopted such means that led to these kinds of results.

[29] The Truth Has Always Existed and Is Ancient; Therefore, Mere Antiquity Is Not Proof of Falsehood: All the prophets (peace be upon them) who have ever come into the world have always presented the call to truth, and their deniers and stubborn opponents have always said that these are old tales which we have heard before. It is as if these fools believe that for something to be true, it must also be new, and anything old cannot be true. Whereas the truth has always been the same in every era and will always remain the same. In matters of religion, only someone who is an enemy of the truth can present something new, inventing something from his own mind and presenting it as truth, or laying the foundation of a new sect. In this way, he may perhaps gain a position of leadership among some people in this world, but in reality, he himself will be misguided and will also misguide others.
