Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم as a Messenger of Allâh, and they also know that there is no Ilâh (God) but Allâh and Islâm is Allâh’s Religion), as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost (destroyed) themselves will not believe. (Tafsir At-Tabarî).
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those (to) whom
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ātaynāhumu We have given them

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 20) ➊ {اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ يَعْرِفُوْنَهٗ …:} That is, the Jews and Christians have no doubt about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being a true Messenger, because mention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is present in their own books. See Surah Al-Baqarah (146), Surah Al-A'raf (157), and Surah As-Saff (6).
➋ The disbelievers of Makkah asked the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so they denied his prophethood and said that there is no mention of him in the Torah and the Gospel. Upon this, the disbelievers asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the People of the Book are denying your prophethood, so who bears witness to your prophethood? The answer to this was given in the previous verse, and in this verse it is stated that the People of the Book are lying when they say that there is no mention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Torah and the Gospel. The reality is that these people know with full certainty that the prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is true, but out of stubbornness and obstinacy they deny it and are putting themselves at a loss. There is no hope of faith from such people, but those whose hearts are sincere will surely believe.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

20. 1. In یعرفونہ, the pronoun refers to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, meaning the People of the Book recognize you just as they recognize their own sons, because your attributes were mentioned in their books and, due to these attributes, they were also awaiting the final Prophet. Therefore, those among them who do not believe are in severe loss, because they are denying despite having knowledge. فان کنت لا تدری فتلک مصیبۃ وان کنت تدری فالمصیبۃ اعظم If you do not know, then that is indeed a calamity, but if you do know, then the calamity is even greater.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

20. Those to whom We have given the Book recognize him (the Prophet) as they recognize their own sons [23]. But those who have ruined themselves—they will not believe.

[23]
The People of the Book Recognizing You ﷺ:

In Arabia, these words are used as an idiom, meaning that if a person has firm conviction about something, it is said that he recognizes it just as he recognizes his own son. That is, just as a father immediately recognizes his son in a gathering of children, in exactly the same way, the People of the Book, according to the signs mentioned in their book, had recognized the Last Prophet as indeed the very Prophet whose glad tidings had been given. Yet, if they do not believe, then the reasons are different, such as national prejudice, the end of their own leaderships and positions, jealousy and malice, etc., or the belief that the Mosaic law is unchangeable until the Day of Judgment, or that no prophet can come except from among the Children of Israel. Whatever the case may be, they are, in any event, only harming themselves.
