The Cattle · Meccan · Juz 8 · Page 149

Or lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: "If only the Book had been sent down to us, we would surely have been better guided than they (Jews and Christians)." So now has come unto you a clear proof (the Qur’ân) from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. Who then does more wrong than one who rejects the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh and turns away therefrom? We shall requite those who turn away from Our Ayât with an evil torment, because of their turning away (from them). [Tafsir At-Tabari]

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 157) ➊ {اَوْ تَقُوْلُوْا لَوْ اَنَّاۤ اُنْزِلَ ……:} That is, you will not be able to make this excuse either. { ’’ بَيِّنَةٌ ‘‘ } By "clear proof" is meant the Noble Qur’an, which is not only guidance and mercy, but also a clear and evident proof of its truthfulness. It is not only for the Arabs, but for all people and all nations until the Day of Resurrection, and anyone can learn Allah’s commands by learning Arabic, as, by Allah’s grace, Islam has spread among all nations.
{صَدَفَ عَنْهَا:} Its meaning is to keep away and also to prevent others. The disbelievers themselves did not believe, and they also prevented others. See Surah Al-An’am (26, 27).

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

157. 1. So that you cannot make this excuse either.
157. 2. That is, after the revelation of the Book of guidance and mercy, now whoever does not become deserving of Allah's mercy by choosing the path of guidance (Islam), but instead adopts the path of denial and turning away, then who can be more unjust than him? The meaning of صَدَفَ has also been taken as turning away and as preventing others.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

Or so that you do not say, “If the Book had been sent down to us, we would surely have been better guided than them.” Now there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and guidance, and mercy. So who is more unjust [180] than the one who denies Allah’s signs and turns away from them? We will punish those who turn away from Our signs with a severe punishment for their turning away.

[180] Even after the revelation of such a blessed and magnificent Book, if anyone turns away from the signs of Allah, then this is an extreme misfortune, and such people who turn away are certainly deserving of the worst punishment. In this verse, the address is to the disbelievers of Makkah, but when their turning away and its punishment was mentioned, the address was made general so that stubbornness and opposition would not arise.
