وَمِنَ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ حَمُولَةً وَفَرْشًا ۚ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ ﴿142﴾

And of the cattle (are some) for burden (like camels) and (some are) small (unable to carry burden like sheep and goats - for food, meat, milk and wool). Eat of what Allâh has provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of Shaitân (Satan). Surely he is to you an open enemy.

(Ayah 142){ وَ مِنَ الْاَنْعَامِ حَمُوْلَةً وَّ فَرْشًا:} { ’’ حَمُوْلَةً ‘‘} Those upon whom burdens are placed, such as camels and oxen, and {’’ فَرْشًا ‘‘} refers to those close to the ground, like sheep and goats. (Muwaddih) As is clarified in the following verses. Although burdens are not placed on the back of an ox, they pull very heavy loads, and this is also referred to as bearing a burden. Allah Almighty has made these crops and cattle, which He has granted you, lawful for you; eat from them and do not follow Satan, by whose deception ignorant polytheists have declared many of these kinds unlawful, as mentioned above.

142. 1. حُمُولَۃً (those that carry burdens) refers to camels, oxen, donkeys, mules, etc., which are used for carrying loads, and فَرْشًا refers to animals that stay close to the ground, such as goats, whose milk you drink and whose meat you eat.

142. 2. That is, from fruits, crops, and cattle. Allah has created all of these and made them your sustenance.

142. 3. Just as the polytheists followed him and made even lawful animals forbidden upon themselves, so making what Allah has made lawful forbidden, or making what is forbidden lawful, is following Satan.

142. And among the cattle are some for carrying loads and some for spreading on the ground (as bedding from their skins and hair). Eat of what Allah has provided for you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan [154], for he is indeed your open enemy.

[154] The meaning of "hamoolah" is beasts of burden, such as camels, oxen, horses, donkeys, etc., and "farshan" means animals of short stature, such as sheep and goats. Among these, you may eat the meat of the lawful animals. And the meaning of following in the footsteps of Satan is that you should not make up your own rules regarding their permissibility or prohibition, or about eating or not eating them. As has already been mentioned in several cases regarding the polytheists of Makkah, Allah Almighty has declared all those who impose or invent restrictions regarding what is lawful and unlawful, and about eating or not eating them, to be Satan, and those who follow such people to be followers of Satan.
