Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And whomsoever Allâh wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islâm; and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky. Thus Allâh puts the wrath on those who believe not.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 125) ➊ {فَمَنْيُّرِدِاللّٰهُاَنْيَّهْدِيَهٗ ……:} The literal meaning of "Islam" is to submit, to surrender oneself. {’’ حَرَجًا ‘‘} Extremely narrow, constricted, a cluster of trees into which nothing can enter. {’’ يَصَّعَّدُ ‘‘} This is the present tense of the verb from {’’ صَعِدَيَصْعَدُ ‘‘} (s) in the form of "tafaʿʿal," meaning {’’ يَصَّعَّدُ ‘‘} was originally {’’يَتَصَعَّدُ‘‘}, and by the addition of extra letters, the meaning has been increased by one word, that is, climbing with difficulty.
➋ In this verse, Allah Almighty has stated that just as prophethood is in His hands, so too are guidance and misguidance. According to His system of justice, whomever He wishes to guide, He opens his chest to accept the truth, makes the paths of guidance easy for him, he faces no difficulty in accepting the truth, and he easily submits himself to Allah and His Messenger. And whomever He does not wish to guide due to his rebellion, He makes his chest tight and extremely constricted for accepting the truth, as if he is climbing upwards with difficulty; the higher he climbs, firstly due to the steepness, and secondly due to the decreasing and then vanishing oxygen, he cannot breathe at all. Those who, understanding the truth, choose the path of denial, impurity of disbelief keeps accumulating upon them due to not attaining the purity of faith. See Surah Al-Baqarah (6, 7), Surah At-Tawbah (125), Surah Al-Lail (5 to 10), and Surah Yunus (100).
➌ Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: "Earlier it was stated that the disbelievers swear that if they see a sign (miracle), they will surely believe. Now it is said that if We do not grant faith, how will they believe? In between, the excuses for making the dead lawful were mentioned; now the answer to this matter is given: the one whose intellect inclines towards not abandoning his own stance, and who makes excuses for every proof he sees, that is a sign of misguidance. And the one whose intellect inclines towards justice and obedience, that is a sign of guidance. Among these people are signs of misguidance; no sign will have any effect on them." (Muwadhih)
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
125. 1. That is, just as it is not possible to ascend to the sky with force, similarly, if Allah makes someone's chest tight, it is not possible for monotheism and faith to enter it, except that Allah Himself opens his chest for it.
125. 2. That is, just as He makes the chest tight, in the same way He involves them in filth; by filth is meant impurity, punishment, or the dominance of Satan.
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran — Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani
Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
125. Whomever Allah wills to guide, He opens his heart to Islam; and whomever He wills to let go astray, He makes his chest tight and constricted, as if he were climbing up towards a height with difficulty [132]. Thus does Allah lay the filth (of aversion and hatred for the truth) [133] upon those who do not believe.
[132] What is the Expansion of the Breast?
By the expansion of the breast is meant that a person wholeheartedly accepts the call of Islam and his heart becomes completely satisfied with its truth, leaving no room for any doubt or suspicion. The constriction of the breast means that as soon as he hears the call of Islam, his heart feels constricted; he does not even try to understand or reflect upon this call. Then, due to this attitude, this constriction keeps increasing moment by moment. Eventually, his condition becomes such that the truth cannot enter his heart at all. At that time, he feels so distressed by the success of Islam as if he is being forced to climb to a height or the top of a mountain, and despite being out of breath, he is compelled to keep climbing.
[133] Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) has interpreted "rijs" at this place as "Shaytan." Thus, the meaning would be that We set a Shaytan over such a person who does not let him even come close to faith. Also, "rijs" means impurity and also punishment. In the translation, the meaning of impurity has been written, and if it means punishment, then it refers to the punishment of curse being imposed upon him in this world, and the punishment in the Hereafter will be even more severe.
