Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men - like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Thus it is made fair-seeming to the disbelievers that which they used to do.

(Ayah 122) ➊ { اَوَمَنْكَانَمَيْتًافَاَحْيَيْنٰهُ …… : } That is, he was a disbeliever and was made a Muslim. (Shawkani) Above, the mention was of the dead among animals; here, the same example is given for the disbelievers, meaning that when they were disbelievers, due to ignorance and disbelief and polytheism, they were all dead. Then, whoever received faith became alive and found light and the path of guidance, and on his face, everyone sees the light of faith, and whoever did not receive faith remained in darkness. (Muwaddih) See the subject of the living and dead among Muslims and disbelievers in Surah Al-Baqarah (257), Surah Hud (24), and Surah Fatir (19 to 22). ➋ {كَذٰلِكَزُيِّنَلِلْكٰفِرِيْنَمَاكَانُوْايَعْمَلُوْنَ:} That is, Satan, through his whispers, presents the deeds of these disbelievers as beautiful in their eyes.

122. 1. In this verse, Allah Almighty has declared the disbelievers as mayyit (dead) and the believer as hayy (alive). This is because the disbelievers wanders in the darkness of disbelief and misguidance and is unable to come out of it, the result of which is destruction and ruin. And Allah Almighty revives the heart of the believer through faith, by which the paths of life become illuminated for him and he sets out on the path of faith and guidance, the result of which is success and prosperity. This is the same theme that has been mentioned in the following verses: Surah Baqarah 257, Surah Hud 24, Surah Fatir, 19, 22,

122. Is the one who was dead, then We gave him life and provided him with a light by which he walks among people, like the one who is in darkness from which he cannot come out [129]? Thus, the deeds of the disbelievers have been made attractive to them.
[129] The Example of a Disbeliever and a Believer:
Here, "dead" refers to being spiritually dead. That is, a person was first a disbeliever, then he accepted Islam and was blessed with the light of the knowledge of revelation. Living among people, he spends his life according to that light, while another person is drowning in the darkness of disbelief, polytheism, ignorance, and misguidance, and finds no way out of these darknesses. Can the condition of these two be the same? And the reason he finds no way out is that these darknesses themselves begin to appear as light to him, and his evil deeds seem good to him. He finds pleasure in every wickedness, and considers every foolishness to be the truth.
