Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 20) {لَايَسْتَوِيْۤاَصْحٰبُالنَّارِوَاَصْحٰبُالْجَنَّةِ … :} This is a summary of the above verses: those who fear Allah and prepare for the Hereafter are destined for Paradise, while those who forget Him and live a life of sin and disobedience are destined for Hell, and the people of Hell and Paradise are not equal. See also the exegesis of Surah Sad (28), Surah Sajdah (18), and Surah Jathiyah (21). By {’’ اَصْحٰبُالنَّارِ ‘‘} is meant the disbelievers, as He said: «وَالَّذِيْنَكَفَرُوْاوَكَذَّبُوْابِاٰيٰتِنَاۤاُولٰٓىِٕكَاَصْحٰبُالنَّارِهُمْفِيْهَاخٰلِدُوْنَ »[ البقرۃ : ۳۹ ] "And those who disbelieved and denied Our signs, they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever." And by { ’’ اَصْحٰبُالْجَنَّةِ ‘‘ } is meant the believers. (See Ahqaf: 14,13) For the mention of both {’’ اَصْحٰبُالنَّارِ ‘‘} and {’’ اَصْحٰبُالْجَنَّةِ ‘‘} together in one place, see Surah Baqarah (82,81).

20. 1. Those who forgot Allah also forgot that in doing so, they were actually wronging their own souls, and a day will come as a result when these very bodies, for which they toiled so much in the world, will become fuel for the fire of Hell. In contrast, there were others who remembered Allah and lived their lives according to His commands. A time will come when Allah will grant them the best reward and admit them into His Paradise, where every kind of blessing and comfort will be available for their rest and ease. These two groups—the people of Paradise and the people of Hell—will not be equal. How could they possibly be equal? One remembered his end and kept preparing for it, while the other remained heedless of his end and thus was criminally negligent in preparing for it.
20. 1. Just as the one who prepares for an exam succeeds and the other fails, likewise the people of faith and piety will succeed in attaining Paradise, because they kept preparing for it by doing righteous deeds in the world. In other words, the world is the abode of action and the abode of testing. Whoever understands this reality and does not live his life heedless of the end will be successful, and whoever is unable to understand the reality of the world and remains heedless of the end, indulging in wickedness and immorality, will be a loser and a failure.
