Before {كَمَثَلِالَّذِيْنَمِنْقَبْلِهِمْقَرِيْبًاذَاقُوْاوَبَالَاَمْرِهِمْ … : ’’ كَمَثَلِالَّذِيْنَ ‘‘}, the subject is omitted: {’’أَيْمَثَلُهُمْ‘‘} that is, the state of those Banu Qurayzah whom the hypocrites are inciting to fight and assuring them of every kind of help, is like the state of those who were near before them. By these are meant the Banu Nadir, who tasted the consequence of their breach of covenant; despite all their fortifications, military preparations, claims of bravery, and promises of help from the hypocrites and polytheists, they could not withstand even the first blow, and, leaving their lands, gardens, and houses for the Muslims, they were exiled in disgrace and humiliation. And for them, there is a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter as well.

Some have taken this to refer to the polytheists of Makkah, who suffered a humiliating defeat in the Battle of Badr shortly before the expedition against Banu Nadir, meaning that these too are, in their defeat and disgrace, just like the polytheists whose time was very recent. Some have taken it to refer to the other Jewish tribe, Banu Qaynuqa, who had been exiled before Banu Nadir and who were close to them in both time and place. Ibn Kathir.
15. 2. That is, this affliction which they tasted is only the punishment of this world; the punishment of the Hereafter is in addition to this, and it will be extremely painful.

15. Their example is like those who tasted the consequences of their deeds a short while [21] before them, and for them is a painful punishment.
[21] A short while ago, the Jews of the tribe of Banu Qaynuqa were expelled with utter humiliation and disgrace, and these Jews of Banu Nadir had witnessed it with their own eyes. The details of this have already been mentioned in the footnotes of verse 2 of this very Surah. And the disbelievers had received the punishment for their deeds a short while ago in the Battle of Badr. This was the punishment they received in this world, while the painful punishment in the Hereafter still remains as it is.
