Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 19) ➊ {اِسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطٰنُ فَاَنْسٰىهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللّٰهِ … :} That is, due to the actions of the hypocrites, Satan has overpowered them and has become so dominant over them that he has made them forget even the remembrance of Allah. These people are the party of Satan, and it is the party of Satan who are the complete losers.
➋ From this, it is understood that as a result of certain actions, Satan gains dominance over a person; among these actions is abandoning congregational prayer. Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ مَا مِنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ فِيْ قَرْيَةٍ وَلاَ بَدْوٍ لاَ تُقَامُ فِيْهِمُ الصَّلاَةُ إِلاَّ قَدِ اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَعَلَيْكَ بِالْجَمَاعَةِ فَإِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُ الذِّئْبُ الْقَاصِيَةَ ] [ أبو داوٗد، الصلاۃ، باب التشدید في ترک الجماعۃ : ۵۴۷ ] "There is no town or desert in which there are three people and congregational prayer is not established among them, except that Satan has overpowered them. So adhere to the congregation, for the wolf only eats the sheep that strays far from the flock." There is also an indication of this in the Noble Qur'an, where it is said: « وَ اِذَا قَامُوْۤا اِلَى الصَّلٰوةِ قَامُوْا كُسَالٰى » [ النساء : ۱۴۲ ] "And when they (the hypocrites) stand for prayer, they stand lazily."

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

19. 1. The meaning of استحوذ is to surround, to encompass, to gather; it is also translated as "to gain dominance," as all these meanings are included in dominance.

19. 2. That is, Satan has made them heedless of the things Allah has commanded them to do, and he makes them commit the things He has forbidden, by making them appear attractive, by deceiving them, or by involving them in desires and wishes.

19. 3. That is, complete loss will be their share alone. As if others are not in loss compared to them. This is because they traded Paradise for misguidance, lied against Allah, and kept swearing false oaths in this world and the Hereafter.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

19. Satan has gained control [22] over them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Satan [23]. Beware! Indeed, the party of Satan are the losers [24].

[22]
The Literal Meaning of ﴿استحوذ﴾:

﴿إسْتَحْوَذَ﴾ ﴿حَاذ﴾ means to drive with severity, and ﴿حاذ الدَّابَةُ﴾ means to make an animal move quickly, and ﴿اِسْتَحْوَذَ﴾ means to overpower someone and drive them harshly. It is said ﴿استحوذ العير على الاتان﴾, meaning a donkey mounts a she-donkey and presses her from both sides (Mufradat). That is, Satan has overpowered these hypocrites and bound them in such a way that they never remember Allah, not even by mistake, and they have become mere instruments of his.

[23]
From the Islamic Perspective, There Can Only Be Two Political Parties: One is Hizbullah, the Other is Hizb al-Shaytan:

﴿حِزْبٌ﴾ means party, group, faction, whose thoughts are in harmony and in which there is severity and intensity. Thus, the word "Hizb" can be used in the sense of a political party, army, and force, whose purpose is to gain influence in the state. In the Battle of Ahzab, such parties united against Islam. In this verse, it is stated that these hypocrites belong to the party of Satan. From the Shariah point of view, there can only be two political parties: one is the party of Allah's obedient servants, which in the next verse Allah has named Hizbullah, and the other is the party of Satan, as mentioned in this verse. All the anti-Islamic forces are included in Hizb al-Shaytan, that is, the party of Satan, and are considered members of this party. For example, in the Battle of Ahzab, the polytheists of Makkah, the Jews of Madinah, the hypocrites, and other polytheist tribes of Arabia were all included. Each of these groups is a party of Satan, and together they form the major party of Satan.

[24] In all the parties included in the Battle of Ahzab, the only common factor was enmity towards Islam and opposition to the Messenger of Allah. Although the activities and methods of all these were of different types, since they came forward against the truth and the party of Allah, it was necessary that Allah also support and help His party. Thus, Allah helped His party in such a way that the party of Satan was at a loss in every respect—their wealth was wasted, their labor, hardship, and travel too, and in the end, they had to face failure and saw no way of safety except to flee. This was their fate in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will face even greater loss and a worse end. It should be clear that the fate of the party of Satan in this world is not limited only to the Battle of Ahzab or other battles, but this is the fate of every party that comes against the truth, provided that those who confront them are true Muslims.
