(The hypocrites) will call the believers: "Were we not with you?" The believers will reply: "Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in Faith) and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allâh came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect of Allâh."

(Ayah 14) ➊ { يُنَادُوْنَهُمْاَلَمْنَكُنْمَّعَكُمْ:} The hypocrites will call out to them, saying: “Were we not with you? Did we not recite the kalimah? Did we not pray with you, pay zakah and perform Hajj, and were we not with you in every matter? Why do you not take us along with you now?” ➋ { قَالُوْابَلٰىوَلٰكِنَّكُمْفَتَنْتُمْاَنْفُسَكُمْ:} That is, even though you were Muslims, you neither became Muslims at heart nor fully sided with the Muslims, rather you kept yourselves entangled in the trial of hypocrisy. ➌ {وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ:} And you kept waiting to see when some calamity would befall the Muslims. ➍ { وَارْتَبْتُمْ:} This is the past tense form of {’’رَيْبٌ‘‘} from the verb pattern ifti‘al {’’ اِرْتَابَيَرْتَابُاِرْتِيَابًا‘‘}, meaning that instead of having faith and conviction in Allah and His Messenger, you remained in doubt and hesitation. ➎ { وَغَرَّتْكُمُالْاَمَانِيُّ: ’’ الْاَمَانِيُّ ‘‘ ’’ أُمْنِيَّةٌ ‘‘} is the plural of {’’ أُمْنِيَّةٌ ‘‘}, meaning these hopes deceived you that in just a few days the Muslims would be destroyed and the name and trace of Islam would be erased. ➏ {حَتّٰىجَآءَاَمْرُاللّٰهِ:} Until death came to you and the opportunity for repentance and sincerity in deeds slipped from your hands. ➐ { وَغَرَّكُمْبِاللّٰهِالْغَرُوْرُ: ’’ الْغَرُوْرُ ‘‘} refers to Satan. 14-1. That is, when there is a barrier wall, the hypocrites will say to the Muslims that in the world did we not pray with you and participate in jihad, etc. 14-2. You had concealed disbelief and hypocrisy in your hearts. 14-3. That perhaps the Muslims might fall into some misfortune. 14-4. In matters of religion, that is why you did not accept the Quran nor the proofs and miracles. 14-5. In which Satan kept you entangled. 14-6. That is, death came to you, or ultimately the Muslims prevailed and your hopes were dashed. 14-7. That is, because of Allah's forbearance and His law of respite, Satan kept deceiving you.

14. The hypocrites will call out to the believers: "Were we not with you [23]?" (The believers) will reply: "Yes, but you put yourselves into temptation [24], and you awaited (misfortune for us), and you doubted [25], and false hopes deceived you until the command of Allah came [26], and the deceiver (Satan) deceived you concerning Allah."
[23] There will be a door in this wall. Now from here, the hypocrites will call out to the believers, saying that in the world, we used to be with you. And today, you people are leaving us here and going alone towards Paradise. You should not have been so disloyal to us.
[24] The believers will reply to this by saying that you are lying when you say that you were with us. In reality, the truth was that you were opportunists and self-seekers, always looking for the chance to side with whichever of the believers or disbelievers seemed to have the upper hand, so that you could gain worldly benefits.
[25] That is, your faith was neither firm in Allah nor in His Messenger, nor in the promises of Allah and His Messenger, nor in the Hereafter. When you saw that the circumstances were unfavorable for the Muslims and you looked at the large numbers, wealth, and war equipment of the disbelievers, your faith would become shaky. Your trust in the promises of Allah and His Messenger would vanish. Then you would even begin to wonder whether this matter of the Hereafter and the reward and punishment for deeds is certain or not. Therefore, it seemed better to you to adopt such a way that it would not be difficult for you to join either party. Thus, you only outwardly remained with us, but all your sympathies and interests remained with the disbelievers.
[26] By Allah’s command is meant either the complete dominance of Islam or death. That is, as long as you had the power, you did not change your attitude. You kept thinking that deceiving the Muslims and keeping them in the dark to gain your own interests was a great success. Whereas in reality, you yourselves had fallen prey to Satan, and until your death, he kept you deluded in this way, making you think that any day now the Muslims would be destroyed and Islam would be wiped out.
