Surah Al-Hadid (57) — Ayah 12

يَوْمَ تَرَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَسْعَىٰ نُورُهُم بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَـٰنِهِم بُشْرَىٰكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ﴿12﴾
On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women: their light running forward before them and by their right hands. Glad tidings for you this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever! Truly, this is the great success!
يَوْمَ yawma (On the) Day
تَرَى tarā you will see
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ l-mu'minīna the believing men
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ wal-mu'mināti and the believing women
يَسْعَىٰ yasʿā running
نُورُهُم nūruhum their light
بَيْنَ bayna before them
أَيْدِيهِمْ aydīhim before them
وَبِأَيْمَـٰنِهِم wabi-aymānihim and on their right
بُشْرَىٰكُمُ bush'rākumu Glad tidings for you
ٱلْيَوْمَ l-yawma this Day
جَنَّـٰتٌۭ jannātun gardens
تَجْرِى tajrī flowing
مِن min from
تَحْتِهَا taḥtihā underneath it
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ l-anhāru the rivers
خَـٰلِدِينَ khālidīna abiding forever
فِيهَا ۚ fīhā therein
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
هُوَ huwa [it] (is)
ٱلْفَوْزُ l-fawzu the success
ٱلْعَظِيمُ l-ʿaẓīmu the great

(Ayah 12) {يَوْمَ تَرَى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَ الْمُؤْمِنٰتِ …:} That is, on the Day of Resurrection when the sun will be folded up (see Takwir: 1) and the moon will lose its light (see Qiyamah: 8) and the stars will scatter and fall (see Infitar: 2), at that time all people will be in intense darkness. The Sirat (bridge) will be placed over Hell, over which everyone will have to pass, as He said: « وَ اِنْ مِّنْكُمْ اِلَّا وَارِدُهَا كَانَ عَلٰى رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا» [ مریم : ۷۱ ] "And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed." There, the only light will be that of faith and righteous deeds; the more perfect the faith, the brighter the light will be. Disbelievers and hypocrites remained in the darkness of misguidance in the world, so there too they will be in darkness. The light of believing men and women will run before them and on their right according to the ranks of their faith and deeds, and there they will be given the glad tidings of Paradise with these words: « بُشْرٰىكُمُ الْيَوْمَ جَنّٰتٌ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُ خٰلِدِيْنَ فِيْهَا ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيْمُ» [ الحدید : ۱۲ ] "Today you have the good news of gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever; that is the supreme success."

12-1. This will take place on the Day of Gathering at the Bridge of Sirat; this light will be the reward for their faith and righteous deeds, by which they will easily traverse the path to Paradise. Imam Ibn Kathir and Imam Ibn Jarir, among others, have explained the meaning of وَ بِاَیْمَانِھِمْ as that their books of deeds will be in their right hands.

12. On that Day, you will see the believing men and believing women, their light running before them [18] and on their right [19]. (It will be said to them:) "Glad tidings to you today of gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. That is the supreme success."

The Light of Faith Depends on the Degree of Faith:

From this verse, it is understood that this matter will occur when, after the judgment in the plain of resurrection, believing men and women are granted the permit to enter Paradise. It is also known that the path leading to Paradise passes through Hell, and every inhabitant of Paradise must necessarily pass over Hell. [19: 71]
And they must cross the Bridge of Sirat, and there will be intense darkness on this path. There, only the light of the believers’ righteous deeds will be of use. The stronger one’s faith and the greater one’s good deeds, the greater will be his light or illumination. In some narrations, it is mentioned that the light of some believers will reach as far as the distance between Madinah and Aden. For some, their light will reach as far as the distance from Madinah to Sana’a, and there will be some whose light will not extend beyond their own feet. One explanation for the variation in this light is that the farther Islam spread through a person’s efforts and the more people received guidance through him, the greater or lesser will be the extent of his light accordingly.

[19] There is a very deep connection between righteous deeds and the right side. The people of Paradise will also be given their book of deeds in their right hand. To understand this, consider how a person, when walking in darkness, usually carries a source of light—such as a lantern, lamp, or torch—in his right hand. Its light falls well in front and on the right hand, but although some light also falls on the left hand or behind, it is much less. The same situation will occur on that day, and the light that falls ahead will be related to the heart; the more a person’s heart is illuminated with the strength of faith and its light, the greater will be the light ahead of him. The light on the right side will be related to his righteous deeds.
