فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ﴿83﴾
Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?

(Ayah 83 to 87){ فَلَوْ لَاۤ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُوْمَ … : ’’ مَدِيْنِيْنَ ‘‘ ’’دَانَ يَدِيْنُ دَيْنًا‘‘} (to give recompense, to be owner, to take account, to be ruler) is the plural of the passive participle {’’مَدِيْنٌ‘‘}, which was originally {’’مَدْيُوْنٌ‘‘}, those who were recompensed, those who were taken to account, those who were ruled, those who were owned. In these verses, {’’ فَلَوْ لَاۤ ‘‘} has come twice and the recompense for both is {’’ تَرْجِعُوْنَهَا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِيْنَ ‘‘}. In these verses, by depicting the scene of the state of death, it is said to the deniers of the Resurrection that why is it not so that at the time of death, when the soul reaches the throat and you are sitting nearby watching the dying person, and We are closer to this dying person than you, then if you are not subjugated to anyone and there is no one to take account from you and you yourself are fully in control, then if you are truthful, why do you not return this departing soul? Your helplessness proves that all of you are owned by Allah Almighty and are bound by His command; when He wants to take away (the soul), He takes it away, and when He wants to resurrect and make (you) stand before Him for reckoning, He will do so. Therefore, your well-being lies in believing in His Oneness, in His Messenger, and in the Day of Resurrection, so that you do not have to face shame on that Day. The state of a person at the time of soul's departure and the helplessness of his sympathizers is also beautifully depicted in Surah Qiyamah, verses (26 to 30).
