وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ﴿43﴾
And shadow of black smoke,
وَظِلٍّۢ waẓillin And a shade
مِّن min of

43. And will be in the shade of black smoke [23].

[23] Among the basic meanings of ﴿يَحْمُوْمٍ﴾ and ﴿حَمَّ﴾ is also "to be black," and ﴿حُمَّة﴾ means coal, ash, and anything burned in fire, while ﴿يحموم﴾ refers to such smoke that is hot, black, and thick. That is, the black smoke that will rise from the fire of Hell—they will go to seek refuge in its shade. In the worldly life, they had spent their time in prosperity and, out of arrogance, had stubbornly opposed Allah and His Messenger. Today, they will be roasted in the heat of such hot smoke and will be humiliated and disgraced to the same extent.
