مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَعَبْقَرِىٍّ حِسَانٍ ﴿76﴾

(Ayah 76) {مُتَّكِـِٕيْنَ عَلٰى رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَّ عَبْقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٍ: ’’ رَفْرَفٍ ‘‘} is a generic noun or a collective noun, its singular is {’’رَفْرَفَةٌ‘‘}, an embroidered carpet that is spread on the bed. {’’ عَبْقَرِيٍّ ‘‘} is anything that is the most superior and rarest in its kind. Its attribution is to {’’عَبْقَرٌ‘‘}, which in the legends of ignorance was the city of the jinn, which is called "Paristan" in Urdu. In Arabia, anything extraordinarily beautiful or excellent was attributed to it, as if it were not from the land of humans but from the land of jinn and fairies. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), in mentioning his dream of drawing water from his well, said: [ ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا عُمَرُ، فَاسْتَحَالَتْ بِيَدِهِ غَرْبًا، فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا فِي النَّاسِ يَفْرِيْ فَرِيَّهُ ] [ بخاري، المناقب، باب علامات النبوۃ في الإسلام : ۳۶۳۴ ] "Then ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took the bucket, and it turned into a very large bucket. I have never seen a person of rare strength who could perform such a feat." Therefore, Shah Rafiuddin (may Allah have mercy on him) translated it as "rare," and translated {’’ حِسَانٍ ‘‘} as "precious." The word {’’ رَفْرَفٍ ‘‘} is singular, accordingly, {’’ عَبْقَرِيٍّ ‘‘} is brought as a singular adjective, and due to being a generic noun or a collective noun, it contains the meaning of plural, so its attributes {’’ خُضْرٍ ‘‘} and {’’ حِسَانٍ ‘‘} are brought in the plural.

76. 1. The meaning is that the people of Paradise will be seated on such thrones upon which green cushions, carpets, and high-quality, beautiful, decorated coverings will be spread.

76. The people of Paradise will be reclining on green, exquisite, and rare [46] carpets.

The Meaning of ﴿عبقري﴾:

﴿عَبْقَرِيٍّ﴾ was the name of the capital of the jinn in the era of ignorance among the Arabs, where only jinn and fairies lived, which we call "Paristan" in Urdu, meaning the place where fairies reside. Then the word ﴿عبقري﴾ began to be used for every fine and rare thing, meaning it is something from Paristan, which cannot be compared to ordinary things of the world. Then this word also began to be used for a person who possesses extraordinary abilities. That is why, to give the Arabs an idea of the extraordinary elegance and excellence of the provisions of Paradise, the word ﴿عبقري﴾ is used here.
