(Ayah 4) {عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ:} Teaching includes many things, that is, He placed in him the ability to express, granted him the skill to coin words of various languages for expressing his intentions and to use them appropriately, from which thousands of languages came into existence, and gave him the power to convey what is in his heart with utmost clarity and beauty, and to understand the words of others. By virtue of this attribute, he understands and explains matters of good and evil, guidance and misguidance, faith and disbelief, and the affairs of this world and the Hereafter, and benefits by putting it to use. See also the commentary of Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah (31): « وَ عَلَّمَ اٰدَمَ الْاَسْمَآءَ كُلَّهَا» and Surah Ar-Rum, Ayah (22): « وَ اخْتِلَافُ اَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَ اَلْوَانِكُمْ ». This sentence is also the predicate of the word { ’’ اَلرَّحْمٰنُ ‘‘}, and by coming in the form of a verb, it also creates specification like the previous sentences.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. 4. 3 By this statement is meant every person's own mother tongue, which every person speaks naturally without learning, and in it, he is able to express what is in his mind; even that small child speaks it, who has no knowledge or awareness of anything. This is the result of divine teaching, which is mentioned in this verse.

4. (Then) He taught him to express himself [3].

[3] Another favor of Allah Almighty upon man is that He granted him the power of speech, through which he can fully express what is in his heart. Furthermore, this power of speech or power of expression depends on many other faculties, such as sight, hearing, intellect and understanding, the power of discernment, and will and choice. Each of these faculties is a great blessing, and for the expression of speech, all or most of these faculties are indispensable.
